Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets.

Match report Local derby gets the pulses going...
This week saw the eagerly anticipated 'Waltham Derby.' On a sunny but windy afternoon we travelled the short distance to little waltham. Where a dry, white track greeted us.

With changes to the side which saw 'tax dodging' uni pair Nick Horne and Mark Elgar selected and a change behind the stumps. Skipper Adam Kendrick won the toss and decided to bowl.

A solid opening few overs from the in form opening partnership of Martin Kendrick and Alex Horne got the game underway. A tentative start with the bat for the home side was clear to see, however 'somehow' no wickets fell in the opening few overs. Even a brilliant effort in the covers from Mark Elgar literally flying to his left couldn't break the pair, the batsmen were starting to get under the skin of the opening attack.....

We were approaching the 15th over when the number 2 batsmen for LW fell, this time pushing the ball straight to Mark Elgar at cover. No debating this one........ A fine catch! That was the only wicket from the opening partnership. Skipper Johnson continued to put runs on the board and it took Dan Bloom replacing Martin up the hill to stop the flow, getting the home team captain caught in the deep.

Mark Elgar bowled a tidy spell in the middle, before a few overs from Graham Brown in which he took 2 timely wickets, helped steady the flow of runs.

Returning opener Martin Kendrick chipped in again with 2 late wickets and on the 'batting friendly' pitch, an embarrassingly big 6 off Alex Horne's first over back was the only real bowling negative, for the 5 man attack.

The home team finishing 202-6 off there 45 overs.

At typical 'derby mood' at tee. Both teams keeping there minds on the game. Tense conversation between team mates and a plan of attack the only real subject in the break.

Skipper Adam Kendrick (13) and Dan Bloom (0) the now settled opening partnership took on the challenge of getting GW off to a good start. However Dan had a moment of madness when leaving a straight ball only to see his off stump knocked to the ground departing without troubling the scorebook. To the delight of the home team Adam soon followed... still struggling for form he got a thin contact playing a leg side delivery and dejectedly walked - caught behind. Neil Robinson scored a quick 17 but didn't hang around as he was bowled by a ball keeping low.

It was only when Neil Harman (27) joined Phil Whettell (39) in the middle that the away side started to take control of the contest. At this point in the game the run rate wasn't the problem, but it was this partnership that stopped the flow of wickets.
Together they took the team beyond the 100 run mark.

When Phil and Neil both fell in the space of a few overs. Another important partnership began. With Mark Elgar (33) and young Wicket Keeper/Batsman Matty Read (24)
knocking off the runs needed at a steady pace. With mature batting, you would be forgiven for mistaking them for the previous partnership........ Ok the grey hair and balding head give it away, but you get the point.

Age didn't matter though, and the two youngsters set great waltham up nicely for...... Well lets call it a........ Interesting finish to the game!

GW hit another stumbling block, when Mark Elgar fell LBW for 33. Number 8 Alex Horne (32*) walked out with waltham needing 60 runs to win off 15 overs.

In keeping with The GW innings yet another mini partnership began to really push the game towards the away team. And other than a few loose shots typical of a number 8 it looked as if a steady, calm and collected end to the game was nigh....

Oh if only....

This game, from ball one had been played with real tension. Both teams really pushing for the win. This coupled with a large number of spectators cheering both teams on, and some very close chances for the home team really pushed the players to there limits....

With only 15 runs required Matty Reed was bowled and and a nervous end was again on the cards...

However 'big hitting' Martin Kendrick and Alex Horne did, indeed, despite a few tense moments finish the job.

And on a Derby day - With a typical derby atmosphere - GREAT Waltham were the victors by 3 wickets.

A game, played with tremendous passion by both teams. And a real team performance with both bat and ball for great waltham. No individual hero's this week. Just hard graft, and togetherness of a side worthy of there place at the top of the table.

With player availability peaking and a solid nucleus of 6-7 guys playing week in week out this team is in great shape going into the middle part of the season... The promotion charge continues.
