Canvey Island 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 03 May 2014 at 1.30 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost By 9 wickets
Match report
The much anticipated start of the league season was over by tea time after a woeful batting display that gifted Canvey one of their easiest victories. Had this been a recurrence the head coach may well have been ordering naughty boy nets on Sunday.
I'm a great believer that over analysis of this game will bear no fruit and feel it was one if the days we all experience in sport...sadly I've not had one if these since school days.
Having won the toss I was convinced that if we could muster 180, we would have had a very close game, judging by the quality of the opposition number three. In hindsight with a below strength side perhaps we should have fielded first, certainly conditions were favourable for batting in the afternoon. The wicket was by no means unplayable and the opposition bowling was competent. Chatting with Canvey opening bowler (Downey 6-20) after the game, he admitted to being a tad surprised at the charitable nature of our batsmen, five of his six wickets either bowled or LBW.
Let's draw a line on this day and come back with a desire and personal responsibility to battle through some tough overs and reap the benefits of lesser talent. I've yet to face an attack in this division with more than two decent bowlers in a side. Next week we face new opposition who will no doubt be fancying their chances having read this result.
Have a pleasant bank holiday.
