Havering atte Bower 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 17 May 2014 at 1.30 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost By 128 runs

Match report A collapse from 69-0 off 9 overs to 84-6 in 15 overs, coupled with a crucial dropped catch by yours truly when R Hurley was on single figures, gave the home side a handsome win and keeps us winless this season.
Fielding a very inexperienced side with only two regular first team bowlers, we started well after winning the toss on a muggy day. Dave swinging the ball prodigiously soon had the home side in trouble at 10 for 2. Lewis bowling a tight line moving the ball away from the right handers, had both batsmen dropped and deserved better reward for a fine spell. Unfortunately Dave sustained an injury and we could not risk him bowling further in the innings. Our inexperienced attack was copping well, Ross especially bowled well, 2 for 22 off his 6 overs. Rules prevent him from continuing a fine tight spell. The crucial partnership between the home captain (Jackson) and Hurley was wrestling the initiative back. Hurley shepherded the tail to such effect that a better than par score was raised at tea. Credit to Sam Harris who is filling the off-spinners role. A fine spell of 4-40 off 8 overs. With regular bowling, the economy rate will improve, Sam now has exam commitments and will miss the next three games, we wish him well.

With short straight boundaries and a fast outfield, 243 to win was not beyond us, even with only 5 regular first team batters. Dave was threatening to make a mockery of the total when the score had raced to 69 at over a run a ball. The home team's first change bowler Beechey changed the game in 4 overs and we were tethering at 84-6!
Lewis batted with great determination, stroking 6 fours in his 27 before mis timing a catch to midwicket, giving the home side a victory by 128 runs.

For large parts of the game we performed well, however we were unable to break the crucial partnership. As a batting unit, one of basic objective is to bat for our allotted overs. Each batsmen have to take responsibility to sell their wicket at a higher dividend. This was one of the youngest 1st team bowling unit I've played with. It shows a lot of promise for the future and no doubt every spell will help.

Weather permitting I look forward to our first home game of the season next week. I'm confident we will get our season back on track.
