Match report
It was good while it lasted but still a bit of a shame to come to an end in such soft circumstances...
Sadly, the wicket played a large part in our downfall and accounted for 2 or 3 dismissals in our pursuit of an above-par score of 164-9. The most favourable description of the track was 'a bit naughty'... so read into that what you will.
SWF somewhat rode their luck to get to a competitive total with useful contributions from Cox (32), Alami (24) and Odedra (24). Pete (3-49) had his first proper bowl for 9 weeks and blew away the cobwebs with a good spell that bodes well for the remaining 8 games. Lewis Chapman was the pick of the attack with 4-28 as his development continues apace.
Once again, our ground fielding was impressive, we held our catches and there was a couple of smart stumpings from Matty Reed thrown in for good measure. Gilly even took the old mantra of 'getting your body behind the ball' to new levels by using his face to stop a guide through the gully... total commitment!
In reply, after the overnight downpour, the glorious weather that followed seemed to 'bake' the track. As the sun blazed, it continued to dry and the surface exploded into life as the ball started to go 'through the top' with devastating effects.
The opportunity for the heavy roller had been missed...
Nindi got a lifter. Chappy got a shooter. There'd been warning signs in the SWF innings but it was like batting on a different surface. The only resistance came from Lewis with a typically hard-hitting and boundary-laden 32. From nearly 300 the week before, we couldn't even muster three figures in reply... Stephenson picking up 5-37.
So we slip to 3rd in the table. It already appears to be a 'league within a league' in Division 5 and with a tricky trip to 4th placed SOSEMT next week followed by a potential banana-skin at home to bottom-placed Havering, we just need to shake this one off and go again...

Ps. Thanks to Clare for helping me out with teas this week... any volunteers for the 18th July?
PPs. Results aside, how good was it to see the ground packed out on Saturday night for the Thai evening? Such a contrast to some other clubs...
PPs. It just seems to be 'one of those seasons' for the 1st XI... injuries, availability and the complete absence of Lady Luck all conspiring against us. Some wretched 'catching' also playing a part. That said, the XI that lined up on Saturday included 8 products of the GWCC Youth System... a couple of wins and it all changes.
PPPs. Some CRACKING results for our Junior teams in recent weeks... it can be hard to see through the gloom on days like Saturday but the future is very, very bright.
