Southend EMT 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 11 Jul 2015 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won By 88 runs.

Match report Back to winning ways as 'Pistol' Pete Collins fires the 2nd XI to an impressive 88-run victory.

Batting first and with half the team stuck on the A127 with sun-seekers and cockle-eaters, at the 20 over mark we'd crept to just 49-1. More importantly, we'd seen off the opening bowlers whilst keeping plenty of wickets in hand. Immense credit should go to the returning Tommy Clampett (26) and the erstwhile Phil Whettell (72) for that early period of 'digging in'.

The following 25 overs were dispatched for 239 runs... for the statisticians amongst you, that's over 9.5 runs per over. Chuckle, Robbo (47) and Chappy Senior (58) cashed in on the change bowling and with the help of 46(!) Extras we closed on a very competitive 287-7.

In reply, SOSEMT were looking well set at 109 for no wicket in the 23rd over but there's a resilience and team spirit in the 2nd XI this season that meant heads didn't drop. The removal of both openers saw the batting order collapse like a cheap deckchair on Southend Pier... SOSEMT simply didn't have the depth in batting or bowling that we possess in our armoury.

The final 6 wickets fell in quick succession as 'Pistol' ran through the middle and lower order in a spell of 3.1 overs taking 6 for 0 (!) - cleaning bowling 5 of his 6 victims including 3 wickets in one solitary over. I'd sent him a text in the morning asking for a 'few more wickets this week'... I think it's safe to say he delivered.

Pete has been threatening to do something like this for the last two years and though an early season injury threatened to scupper his season... He deserves all the plaudits and praise for this match-winning contribution. Personally, I'm just really pleased for the lad. He's still raw and has a lot to learn but he always goes out and gives it his all...

One more win please to achieve our next target... Any complacency on Saturday against Havering-AB could be very, very costly

And to those waiting in the wings... keep working hard and your opportunity will come. The holiday season will soon be upon us and you'll need to hit the ground running.

'Skip'

Ps. I hasten to add that I make no apologies for basking in the reflected glory of the 2nd XI...
PPs. I know nothing about bamboo but the 1st XI just seem to be having 'one of those seasons'. Winning is a habit... but so is losing. A win on Saturday could breathe life into the final 6 games...
