Rayleigh 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 27 Jun 2015 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 25 runs
Match report
A fine team performance from Rayleigh, showing greater desire and commitment, deservedly gave them victory in an important relegation clash by 25 runs at Rawreth.
Winning the toss, Swanie decided our best option was to chase against the bottom side, which made sense. Vyse’s aggressive intent and bold stroke play got the home side off a quick confident start, a couple of sixes disappeared requiring a search squad. The opening pair had added 80 when attempting to reserve sweep, Vyse (52) was LBW to Swanie. The other opener Keeley continued the momentum and Rayleigh looked set for a big total when Ollie bowled Keely for a fine 62. At 128-2, the momentum changed and our bowlers started to apply the pressure, further wickets for Ollie and Dan, making he’s first league start of the season plunged the home side to 135-5 off 30 overs. This was our moment, against the bottom side, we had an opening to keep Rayleigh under 200. However, some late order hitting from S Druce (33), enable Rayleigh to finish on 224, a competitive total. 3 wickets each for Ollie, Dan and Sam.
We got off to a cautious start, sadly my form is elusive and I was walking back to the pavilion mistiming a drive to cover. Sam then joined Simon and both looking assured, Sam playing some lovely drives and pulls were building a game changing partnership. The score had reached 87 when Nunn bowling with control and guile lured Simon (36) to drive at mid-on for, 87 for 2 off 21 overs. Two overs later, Sam (42) was caught and bowled by Nunn for 42. Thereafter, the home side always appeared in control and none of our batsmen were able to play an aggressive innings of Vyse earlier. Slippery (42) however looked to be giving us a chance when he was run-out going for a second. In the end we were 25 runs short when Sam Harman drive to mid-off.
So at the halfway point in the season we are in a challenging/desperate/worrying position, in the relegation zone second from bottom, just one point above the bottom side Havering-atte-bower and now 10 points behind Rayleigh. Yes, we only had 2 recognised first team bowlers yesterday; we very rarely have been able to select our 1st eleven; Clouty is out for the season and now our captain has suffered a groin strain and could be in need of a rest. So what hopes of us keeping division two status alive end of August? We are capable of beating many of the teams. There is no stand out team, more importantly, we are capable of beating at least 4/5 of the teams and that is exactly what will be required. My personal observation when losing to what appear lesser talented teams is the desire and commitment. Many of the games, we have found ourselves in good position, however unable to capitalise on the advantage. Next week, the local derby at Little Waltham, who I notice have not won any of their last three games, earlier this season they were top. One or two slices of luck for our batters, lets ensure we keep our energy up in the field and not show the opposition our disappointment at dropping a catch, bowling a 4 ball, mis-fielding. We have the talent, let’s come off next week, all eleven having given 110%.
Congratulations to the elder statesman of the Club, Phil for guiding the seconds to outstanding run chase. We are all very proud of the Seconds this season, who have excelled as a team. Is there mutterings about promotion?
The heat from the Spain is coming this week, enjoy the weather.
