Purleigh II v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 12 Jul 2008 at 1.30 pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 31 runs
Match report
Waltham won the toss on a wicket that was slightly damp and looked a good toss to win.An early breakthrough from Cookie gave us a good start, we couldnt capatalise on this and the batsmen were soon playing positive and aggresive shots and scoring at high tempo with Freeguard and MCshea sharing a 76 run partnership. The introduction of Jim saw the runs dry up from one end and Brownie removed Freeguard at the other and the runs were drying up.We clawed our way back into it but we were made to pay with at least half a dozen chances being missed in the field Drop catches, run outs and stumpings being our downfall. The batsmen took great advantage of our errors and were soon playing shots to all corners and the run rate increased immensly with 85 runs being scored of the last 10 overs with Mcshea 87 and a brisk 36 not out from Barrick fooling most of us with his black trainers playing many ( sorry all ) cross batted shots to finish the Purleigh innings at 231-6 . Jim was the pick of the bowlers with 1- 29 from 12 and Glen 3-35 from 10.
The reply got of to a slow start and wasnt helped when the Injured Mick was bowled early on, but both Buck and Phil were going great guns with a partnership of 45 before the latter was caught out for 17 with a superb catch from Mcshea. Andy joined Buck to carry on playing positively and put on 41 before Buck was harshly adjudged LBW for 34.Dumpy came to the crease not knowing what all the fuss was about and played positive but when Andy was caught out the pressure was on as runs were at a premium. Brownie joined Dumpy and these two put on 59 with some good hitting and running but with Brownie Knackered after running all the twos a direct hit saw him run out for 21, the game was out of reach and so we played to reach 200 to get the extra batting point this target was acheived in the last over, but the second defeat of the season had been inflicted.
It was a shame that we left our worst fielding performance until this game but maybe a boot up the backside will do us good in the long run and hope we can get back to winning ways on Saturday.
