Great Waltham Cricket Club Under 13's v Tillingham on Wed 01 Jul 2015 at 6pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won By 2 wickets

Match report On the hottest day of the year so far, the Waltham WAM’s were in for a sizzler of a match. With Tillingham winning the toss and electing to bat their opening pair played with style and guile. Both batsman were composed beyond their years and at the half way stage were 60 without loss.

Barrell (28) was the first wicket to fall and with Elles striking twice in the same over, the game was in the balance. Snowdon (50 not out retired) continued to find the boundary rope and will surely turn into a fine player. He graciously retired at fifty which found the Hylton brothers together. Dad, Paris, watched while umpiring in the middle to see Tillingham make 115 of their allocated 20 overs. A very ‘gettable’ target on a very quick outfield.

The Mighty Green Caps innings started eventfully as Atkinson faced the first delivery. Cumpstey came hurtling down the wicket only to be sent back to see the ball hit the stumps and be run out - a very disappointed opener. Both Atkinson and Elles also returned to the clubhouse cheaply as Great Waltham found themselves 6 for 3 off of 2.1 overs.

This now saw Brown and Webb at the crease and a little composure needed to be restored. The good ball was being defended well and the poor one dispatched for four. Brown (16) made quick runs but was bowled taking a swing. The fourth wicket had put on 33 runs as Barker entered the stage. The Webb/Barker partnership would be an important one as ‘Little and Large’ started to accelerate the run rate. As drinks were taken the scoreboard read 74 for 4 from 10 overs.

Changing ends, Tillingham changed wicketkeeper enabling Snowden to bowl. This saw the spinner bowl Barker (22) with his first delivery but Eaglesham hit the next for four. The game was hotting up while the air temperature cooling down. Webb (28) continued to bat well but was caught athletically by Barrell. Eaglesham too had departed for a very important 10 runs.

The tail of the innings now needed to wag – and wag it did! Mack hit a cracking 4, Chapman pushed 3 key singles and Gilmour dispatched bowler Green for 4. Two runs needed to win with two wickets remaining. With the final ball of the seventeenth over being bowled as a wide the game finished a little anti-climatically.

No complaints however on a lovely barmy evening. Some great performances from players on both sides played in the right spirit. Roll on Hatfield Peverel this Friday.
