Little Baddow 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 06 May 2017 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 92 runs.

Match report Hopefully with a much bigger squad to select from this season, there is great optimism, however we are expecting some tough games with five first teams in the division, Little Baddow one of them.

The captain won the toss and elected to bowl on the basis that we could chase anything set, I suspect we didn't expect to be chasing in excess of 300 in the first game.

The wicket was an absolute belter with short straight boundaries, maidens were a rarity, we only bowled two. With the exception of JT, 10 overs for 46, sadly the rest of the bowling conceded in excess of 5+. There were a couple of run out opportunities missed and a three dropped catches, two tough ones. Our young attack has much potential and promise and will have to learn to bowl on batting friendly tracks. It was not all doom and gloom. It is very easy to let heads and body language convey a beaten man, however I thought we continued to field well and Ryan's keeping is improving with each game.

At tea the message was to play yourself in and assess the position after each 10 overs. 304 was NOT an impossible chase, however a couple of front-line batsmen would need to make a significant contribution with others chipping in.

In recent weeks my bat has been completely divorced from the ball, therefore I am grateful to the captain for allowing me to open on a beautiful wicket and the opposition keeper for spilling a low chance after I had got off the mark with a cover drive.
The opening partnership was 43 at a shade under 5 an over when Matty mis-timed a drive to cover giving Ashton a deserved scalp.
Ashton continued to bowl well and finished 10 overs, 1 for 24 including 5 maidens. With Nindi starting to find the gaps and the occasional boundary, we need 164 off the last 15 overs. Sadly this was when the ball cannoned off my pads onto the leg stump. Nindi was out soon afterwards for a well played 54. The momentum was lost and Phil together with Ryan ensured we obtained a further batting point by getting to 200.

One defeat doesn't ruin a summer and our bowlers will have better days. There is a really good spirit in the side and I had a thoroughly enjoyable time (obviously getting a few runs helps).

Next week, another first team visit us, South Woodam Ferrers. Looking forward to our first win.
