Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Tillingham 3rd XI on Sat 06 May 2017 at 1 pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 17 runs

Match report The mighty Green Caps are back fitter and stronger this season having wintered well at the Writtle Cricket Centre. The 3rd XI have 10 friendlies this year with hopefully league cricket the aim for the 2018 season.

The seasons opener was played at Hatfield Peverel CC against Tillingham 3rd XI. This would be a good test for all concerned with Deano, Gav and Micky Headon providing the experience and seven youngsters providing the legs.

A chance meeting by Brownie curtesy of Chelmsford City Council saw Micky opening the batting along with Tom Gore. Micky, not having played for a few years, saw Gore, Brittain and Webb all depart cheaply with the score at 80 for 3 after 19 overs. Was it personal?

Micky was then joined by Barker and both played a straight bat to a straight ball. Headon continued to play majestically and Barker smashed a couple of sixes, one over the Hatfield Peveral CC clubhouse. Headon bought up his ton and both carried their bats on 119 and 34 respectively. With the score of 185 for 3 in 40 overs it was thought GWCC might be 20 runs shy of a competitive score.

Tillingham started well with both openers able to hit the ball hard and true. The Waltham Babes weren't flustered however and at 100 for 1 after 22 overs it was going to be close. With Elles as captain and Harman at his side, a decisive bowling spell by Brittain saw the Green Caps take 4 vital wickets. With Gore and Eaglesham also getting in on the act, Tillingham were unable to score at a similar rate in the second half of their innings. With wickets tumbling and tight bowling by Chapman Junior and Brown, the visitors made 168 for 8 at the close.

A great victory by 17 runs. Well done Deano. Well done Gav and well done Micky Headon for scoring 119 runs! This match report will have included some 'fake news' as the writer was in Amsterdam over the weekend. Normal service will resume next week and will be more 'Guardian' than 'White House'. #strongertogether #oneclub.
