Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Westcliff 4th XI on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 1 pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 60 runs
Match report
With no game last week, the Great Waltham 3rd XI were keen to continue their comradery and winning ways. Playing at Hatfield Peveral for the second home game of the season, Westcliff 4ths were being entertained. A close game was envisaged and even the local pheasant had turned up to watch.
With the Green Caps deciding to bat first, Gore and Webb started to build a sound base for a competitive score. Webb was frustratingly catch at square leg for 6 and at 26 for 1 after 7 overs, Brittain was now at the crease.
This second wicket partnership lasted for 23 overs and was the key one of the match. Gore and Brittain batted with patience and confidence, hitting the bad ball for four. Both batsman have a great deal of power and a variety of shots and these were being used to full effect. Gore reached his half century first, hitting a fine 6 along the way. Brittain was close behind and he too smashed a 6 into the allotments.
As often is the case, a bowling change saw the partnership broken and with Brittain (60) and Gore (62) the scoreboard read 154 for 3 from 35 overs. Brown, Barker, Eaglesham and Tanner all scored quick runs to see the 200 up. At this point the writer would like to mention Tanner, a fine specimen of a man who will keep the Waltham WAGs on their toes. It is rumored that a GWCC calendar could be in the pipeline with Luke taking the August page. The chairman has agreed to the December slot!
After a good tea, Westcliff's innings started disastrously. Three quick wickets from Eaglesham Junior and Chapman saw the visitors tottering and it needed Jackson and Belton senior to steady the ship. These two were starting to make the Waltham fielders work hard as they nudged the score along nicely. Skipper Eaglesham was changing the bowling around intelligently but this didn’t stop Jackson from reaching his 50. This partnership needed to be broken soon or the game might start to run away from the Green Caps.
An eager single saw Belton run out and with Gavlar coming on to bowl some fine spin, Jackson was bowled for 66. With little batting to come Elles entered into the spirit of the game, batting for Westcliff and being sledged by his own teammates. The visitors finished on 140 for 8 and a victory by 60 runs.
Lisa Webb will be taking orders for the calendar and be creating a list of club members willing to appear in it. So far we have Luke, Brownie and Spencer on August, December and April respectively. #strongertogether #oneclub.
