Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Galleywood 4th XI on Sat 17 Jun 2017 at 1 pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report The fun in the sun continued at Church Road, Hatfield Peverel as the Waltham Babes entertained Galleywood 4th XI. On a scorcher of a day the visitors decided to bat as the Green Caps went in search of their sixth victory in succession.

The Galleywood side looked similar to Great Waltham’s in terms of experience and youth. As Eaglesham and Chapman took the new ball the later got the early breakthrough seeing Adams return to the clubhouse for 2. The second wicket saw McFaul and Brace at the crease as both youngsters looked to play with style and guile. They pushed the score on from 11 for 1 from 6 overs to 51 for 1 from 16 overs. Deano was changing the bowling around and the spin of Barker took the wicket of Brace (24) with a fine catch from Eaglesham Junior in the deep at long on.

Cumpstey too was turning his arm as the score went from 57 for 2 to 78 for 6 in 11 overs. The spinners had the Galleywood middle order in a whirl as Barker (2 for 7 from 4 overs), Cumpstey (3 for 20 from 4) and Gavlar (2 for 6 from 4) looked to be enjoying themselves. The tail order ensured that Galleywood saw out their overs however, as both Radley and Brace Senior steadied the ‘Galley’ with the visitors finishing on 124 for 9.

Tea was had and at this point special mention should go to Lee Brittain for his unique skill of carving a variety of animals from either water or yellow melon. Sculptures on offer included elephant, buffalo and meer cat but he decided to focus on one of his more difficult pieces, - a cats’ arse!

With Gore promoted to the 2nd XI, Webb was partnered with Elles and it was his turn to ‘get in’ on the runs. With Webb and Brittain unable to get into their rhythm, Elles and Brown scored the lion share of the runs and at 87 for 2 all was running along smoothly. A slight lack of concentration saw Elles (51) and Brown (23) bowled but there were too many overs remaining for Galleywood to apply any pressure and the Waltham Babes ran out victorious by 5 wickets. The experience of Spencer, Deano and Gavlar with the bat wasn’t needed and in this heat none seemed to be complaining!!

Roll on next week – we all can’t wait – the fun in the sun must carry on! #strongertogether #oneclub.
