Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Rayleigh 7th XI on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 1 pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 131 runs
Match report
The mighty Greens Caps played their last scheduled game of the season before many jet of to warmer climates. The team this Saturday resembled more Dads Army than Waltham Babes. Barker, Cumpstey, Richards and Webb, all of the senior variety, had been drafted in to enable the game to go ahead. The tail was long and the Babes that were playing needed to step up to the plate.
Galvar and the Rayleigh 7th team skipper had a friendly debate about who would bat first and with no agreed conclusion, similar to Brexit negotiations, a coin was spun. Great Waltham were to bat and Cumpstey and Webb junior found themselves in the middle. Communication is a key requirement in the game of cricket but Kamikaze Kieran and Calamity Cumpstey seem yet to appreciate this! With both being as guilty as each other, Cumpstey was run out in the fourth over with the score on 4 as both found themselves at the same end of the wicket.
As Brown entered centre stage, this next partnership was going to be crucial to the outcome of the game. Waltham needed to bat their overs and accumulate some runs and both youngsters seemed to appreciate this. 4 for 1 after 4 overs became 33 for 1 after 10. Both Webb and Brown were finding the boundary rope and confidence was growing. From a scoring perspective, both batsman kept abreast of each other. 30 runs became 40 runs as both W and B edged towards their half century. Would they both make it? Who would get there first?
The score was rattling along nicely and at 85 for 1 from 20 overs the Dads Army were enjoying watching from the clubhouse. Webb reached his 50 in the 24th over and Brown soon followed suit. The Waltham Babes had certainly stepped up to the plate and both looked set for a very big score. Was a century on the cards for either of the two youngsters?
With Webb and Brown having reached this first landmark they now seemed to play with a freedom that had not been seen before. Boundaries were aplenty and both were on the same frequency in terms of communication and running between the wickets. Webb unfortunately was the first to depart having scored 85 but with a second wicket partnership of 182 Great Waltham were certainly in the driving seat.
This was Brown’s big chance to become a centurion and after some discrete work from Gavlar who was umpiring, Brown took a cheeky single to deep gully and raised his bat in triumph! One hundred had been scored. What a pleasure to witness. A few quick wickets saw the Great Waltham innings finish on 227 for 5 from 40 overs.
The Rayleigh reply didn’t start well and with Chapman opening the bowled they found themselves 2 wickets down in the first over. Andrew, the visitor’s opener, was looking dangerous but Tokley’s bowling spell from the pavilion end kept things tight. The pick of the Waltham bowlers was Chapman (3 for 10), Heaton (2 for 24) and Cumpstey Junior (2 for 8) with both Webb Senior and Richards chipping in with a wicket. Rayleigh accumulated 96 runs allowing the Green Caps to record their tenth win of the season.
Giant Panda - your fielding prowess was missed today. Guy - you bowled brilliantly but need to remember to keep the ball on that strip thing known as the wicket! Simon – you get better each week and Galvar – your approach to captaincy is admirable. Cricketing friendship is a wonderful thing! #strongertogether #oneclub.
