Great Waltham Cricket Club Under 15's v Maldon on Wed 14 Jun 2017 at 6pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 10 runs

Match report The second game of the season for the U15s would test their ‘bouncebackability’ as the visitors Maldon were again the opposition. Having played them in the cup and lost, only 6 days previously, this would be a good test of their resolve. Great Waltham won the toss and decided to bat.

Webb and Cumpstey opened the batting and both looked to score quickly. They needed to run hard between the wickets and remember that there were only 20 overs to accumulate a competitive total. Communication however seemed optional and after a few dubious calls in a stand of 33, Cumpstey was run out for 12. This seemed to be infectious and Barker quickly followed suit in similar fashion for 1. At the half way stage the home side were 40 for 2 from 10 overs.

Brown arrived at the centre and started to bat with authority. The run rate needed to improve with eight wickets in hand. Webb (20) and Brown (24) was bowled in the 16th and 18th over respectively and the pair of Elles and Murphy saw the innings out with a total of 94 to defend. This felt at least 25 runs shy of a good score.

This U15 team however never know when they are beaten and with some excellent bowling options anything is possible. Reeve and Allen looked to be in a hurry as Chapman took the first wicket but at 50 for 2 from 10 overs the game looked as if it was running away from the Green Caps. With the pace of the ball aiding the batsman a change to some spin had the desired effect.

This came in the 14th over with the score going from 68 for 4 to 70 for 7. In these 6 balls the dangerous Reeve was caught and bowled by Barker for 34 and Maltby and Dawes both returned to the pavilion without scoring. The game was back on!

Elles and Brown bowled at the death. Everyone was back on their toes and the game was won when Allerton was run out looking for a single that was never there. One small point to note. All need to be encouraged in the field for the Green Cap U15s to reach their full potential. Well done Smith, Putt and Payne for sticking to the task. In with a shout of winning the league? Now that would be ‘bouncebackability’! #strongertogether.
