Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v East Hanningfield & Gt Burstead 1st XI on Sat 16 Jun 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
If your a Great Waltham supporter and your life philosophy is 'it's all about the winning'...you would have left Saturday evening depressed and upset and over analysed what could have been. Nearing 55 years, my philosophy has changed and it's a absolute joy to be part of games of this nature, even if I couldn't contribute with the bat (that's still painful). In the end, the visitors scrapped home by 2 wickets in a hugely entertaining game.
Having been inserted, we were 10 off the first over of the day with Micky leading the charge, sadly it was short lived as he attempted to clear mid-off, 22-1 off 8 overs. Yours truly nicking one to the keeper made it 35-2 off 13 overs. There followed good partnership 40 with Nindi in sublime form and the ever-improving Harrison shifting the momentum back in our favour. However the eldest of the Morgan family, surprised by the ball landing in he's right hand at first slip removed Harrison.
Jarnel was the Hanningfield best and most threatening bowler, finally lured Nindi into a drive with ricochet onto the stumps 85-4 and we were in danger of an early finish. Phil 41* carried his bat through to the end and with the help of the fearless Cameron 28 (6 fours), gave us a total which at tea looked like 20 short.
After 18 overs, East Hanningfield were comfortably placed at 88-1 with Singh and P Morgan approaching their fifties. Let the entertainment begin, The 'Romford Express' (Nindi) maybe renowned for his stroke play, however his inswingers of 3 paces started to change the destiny of the game. Firstly, the visiting captain, unable to contain himself, bafflingly hit straight to deep mid-wicket, where Harrison took a good catch. Prior to then 'The Prince of Essex' (Whettell) leapt like a waif ballerina at point to take a jaw-dropping one-handed catch. All of a sudden, runs were not easy and soon the visitors were 7 down and 20 still required. Whatling had hit a crucial 24 had been bowled by Nindi when on 2, only to be reprieved by a no-ball for breaking the stumps in his delivery stride. In the end the visitors won with 2 wides.
A great afternoon's cricket with many of the opposition staying behind for well earned drinks.
I've been musing over our youngsters this season and agree that they found the going tough in games. However what's hugely encouraging is their desire to not get too despondent. With each game, they are becoming better players and with more games, as a club we are going to bear fruit. Let's keep the faith.
Next week the visitors are the bottom side Rettendon, who so far have not won a game this season. Let's not get complacent, I recall losing to Stock last year similarly placed. It's a hugely important fixture, sadly I'm away in Hamburg, no, not a stag do or a beer festival...visiting The World's Largest Model Railway. I know you are jealous.
Best of luck lads.
