Great Totham 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 07 Jul 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
A beautiful calm and assured century from 'The Romford Express' (Nindi), backed by personal league best bowling figures for Jamie Carroll, 5-38 off 10 overs, gave us a 5 wicket victory over the host that moved us out of the relegation zone.
Having won the toss, Robbo rightly decided that on a small ground chasing was the best option. There was pre-match chat about par being 300 at Totham. The only time I chased over 300 was in a day game of 120 overs. The host openers were intent on 300+ at tea and were 18 after 2 overs. Robbo having to open the bowling as Jamie had forgotten about the early start time. Harry took on the responsibility and bowled an economical spell of 7 overs for 19. The Totham openers had added 88 when Joe Reed gave us the breakthrough by bowling Chadwick for 41. By now Jamie had arrived and quickly settled into a fine rhythm bowling the opposition captain for 38. Thereafter we took control of the game and the wicket was not a 300 par as balls were keeping low. Wickets fell at regular intervals and Totham were 166-9. Some lusty hitting by Davis (No.10) 37* propelled Totham to 204 all out and raised the home side's moral. Jamie has bowled consistently well all season without the rewards. Yesterday he thoroughly deserved his league personal best. I've not said this previously, however we fielded well and with the exception of one very difficult return chance to Robbo, no catches were dropped and the ground fielding on a bumpy outfield was commendable. If we'd been asked to chase 204 on this ground, most sides would gladly accept the challenge knowing the odds should be in your favour.
We batted for half an hour before 'Tea' and were sitting comfortably at 26-0.
Resuming our innings having watched the other 'fixture', I was promptly bowled (one that kept horribly low). However 'The King of Essex' (Phil) and Nindi calmly took us past 100 and victory was looking like a formality. There is no such thing as a formality in this side and although we lost another 4 wickets, we never lost any momentum or lost wickets in short bursts. This year it's been a pleasure and frustration watching Nindi bat. He simply doesn't look like getting out and he'll be relived that he has finally reached the converted three figures. After Phil had fallen, to one that kept low, he (Nindi) shepherded our very young middle order to ensure the result was not in any doubt . The only surprise was dispatching a log-hop straight to deep square.
A fine all-round team display on a difficult ground to defend and against fellow relegation battlers. Next week we host one of the form teams Great Wakering. As the holiday season starts to create stress for the section committee with various absentees, I'm thinking what a great opportunity for our youngsters to gain valuable senior cricket experience.
One final note on the early start. I must say I rather liked the timings as I sat in the Dhanjal's kitchen sipping Gin cocktails and feasting on a sea-food bbq, watching the host nation get eliminated in 4K definition!
Enjoy the sun and by the time I compose the next match report, we could be preparing to lay rest the ghost of 1966!
