Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Rayleigh 6th XI on Sat 19 May 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 184 runs

Match report The day of the W. Windsor, Wembley, Waltham and hopefully a ‘Win’. Great Waltham 3rd XI entertained Rayleigh 6ths in their second game of T Rippon league cricket at Hatfield Peverel CC. With Harman at the helm and Chapman Senior, Reed and Swann in the side there was more anticipation than at the Royal Wedding!

Rayleigh won the toss and elected to field. The familiar opening pair from last season of Gore and Webb were at the crease and all was ticking along nicely until Webb was bowled for 8 in the ninth over – 32 for 1. Gore (23) and Eaglesham Senior (3) were the next to depart as Gore was caught behind trying to chase a ball down the leg side and Eaglesham smashed a delivery straight down the throat of deep long on. 38 for 3 from 12 overs.

The next period of play would be crucial for the Green Caps in their search for full batting points. Chapman and Josh De’ath were now in the middle surveying the bounce and pace of the pitch. Chappie was bowled by spinner Andrews which saw Swan arrive batting at number six. This 5th wicket partnership between Josh and Swanny made over 100 quick runs. Why worry about surveying the pitch? Swanny, trading in sixes and fours, and Josh supporting nicely were in total control as most deliveries were dispatched to the boundary amongst the stinking nettles. The watching faithful needed to be on their toes too!

Swanny (82) and Josh (25) were both caught trying to score more quick runs but a very mature innings of 41 was made by Jake Death helping to secure the fourth batting point. The tail wagged a little as Tokeley (6), debutant Kent (5) and Harman (12) made valuable runs – 241 all out from 38.3 overs.

The Great Waltham bowling attack had a youthful look about is as Jake Death (3 for 8) and Kent (1 for 16) were given the new ball. Rayleigh 6s lost wickets consistently throughout their innings. With the two Js, Jake and James, bowling 7 overs each, the score was 24 for 4. Gore (4 for 17) and Tokeley (1 for 14) were the next duo to bowl with equal success and 24 for 4 became 53 for 9 from 25 overs. Reed took the last wicket and Rayleigh 6s were all out for 57.

So the day of the W. A Royal Wedding at Windsor. A Chelsea versus Manchester FA Cup final at Wembley but most enjoyably a Great Waltham 3rd XI win against Rayleigh 6ths. History in the making – the first league 'Win' by any Great Waltham 3rd XI team!
