Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v South Woodham Ferres 3rd XI on Sat 14 Jul 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
After last weeks’ close encounter with Oaklands CC, Great Waltham 3rd XI were looking to get back to winning ways after two consecutive weekend defeats. The corresponding fixture at the start of the season had been abandoned due to rain. How different the conditions were now in July, with a well-watered square and a tinder box dry outfield at Hatfield Peverel CC.
South Woodham Ferrers 3s won the toss and decided to bat but were soon rueing their decision. Alfie Eaglesham and Jake De’ath ripped into the South Woodham Ferrers upper order who were soon 9 for 3 from 3 overs. Eaglesham was bowling a great line and length and De’ath was finding extra bounce with the new ball up the slope. Three wickets down was soon to double as the youthful Waltham opening bowlers continued their devastating spell. Eaglesham bowled captain Cruickcshank for 9, Jake De’ath took his second wicket with Webb taking a simple catch behind and Alfie took his fourth wicket bowling Carr for 1.
With South Woodham now 21 for 6 from 7 overs, a very early tea was looking likely but to prevent this the visitor’s youngsters needed to show their elders how to do it. Both opening bowlers probably bowled one too many overs as the fall of wickets stemmed. This they did as the seventh wicket put on 52 runs in 11 overs with Everitt Senior and Capel batted sensibly – 73 for 7 from 17 overs. Dumas was now at the crease playing technically very well, certainly one for the future, as Capel was caught Gore bowled Reed for 20. The final two youngsters occupied another 9 overs as Great Waltham took the pace of the ball in the guise of Gavlar, Josh De’ath and Gore. South Woodham Ferrers 112 all out from 34 overs.
As tea was taken, news filtered through that the 1st XI were all out for 127 runs versus Springfield 2s and the 2nd XI would be chasing 269 runs to win against Great Wakering 1s – so most thought that only one win was likely for the Green Caps this weekend.
With Gore and Spencer Eaglesham opening the batting a steady start was needed but Eaglesham Senior failed to get of the mark. 7 for 1 from 3 overs. The rest of the match however was less eventful as Gore and De’ath ‘knocked off’ the runs in a calm and reassuring manner. Gore reached his 50 in the eighteenth over and the winning runs were reached with De’ath striking a boundary – Great Waltham 113 for 1 from 19.2 overs - a sound and comprehensive victory.
As the 3rd XI clapped off a gallant South Woodham Ferrers, the exciting news was received from Coronation Park that Springfield 2s had been skittled out for 91. Any news from the 2s…………………? Could history be in the making with three league victories being achieved for the first time? Lets get back to Great Waltham quickly!
