Rayleigh 6th XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 21 Jul 2018 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
A sultry summer Saturday where Great Waltham 3rd XI travelled to Rawreth to play Rayleigh 6th Xl. Little did we know at the start of the game - but this was going to be the game of firsts.
With the start of the summer holidays it was good to have both Ollie and Louis Brittain back in the team and the 'Twins' of Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger aka Simon and Andy were fit and raring to go. Deano won the toss, asked Rayleigh to bat and the game was underway.
Alfie Eaglesham and James Kent opened the bowling. Both needed to deliver a good line and length as the experienced Rayleigh opening pair would punish anything wide of leg stump. Verrinder looked to do exactly this and once the Waltham fielders were 'pierced' everything went for four. Kent was enjoying a good spell of 9 overs. An excellent catch at first slip by S Eaglesham (the first first!), at the second attempt, saw Paik out for a duck. As Kent was bowled through, his figures of 2 for 25 from 9 overs, had set the tone.
The game entered a key stage as Rayleigh were 103 for 2 from 18 overs. In the hot and dusty conditions all the Great Waltham fielders needed to remain 'upbeat'. Louis Brittain and Jake De'ath were now in the attack - remember nothing wide otherwise Verrinder would take advantage. Andrews was caught Louis bowled Jake for 20 for an important breakthrough.
With Deano now ball in hand, the wickets started to tumble. Ollie Brittain was the bowler that caught Verrinder (71) on the thigh and as he tumbled over he dropped his bat on his wicket (the second first). Deano was now licking his lips and with a full straight delivery he mopped up the Rayleigh tail. 5 for 16 from 4.2 overs (the third first - a Michelle for Deano). Rayleigh all out for 179 from 38.2 overs.
For Great Waltham to be victorious the fourth first needed to be achieved - score 180 runs to win! With Gavlar and S Eaglesham keen to get started the score quickly became to 22 without loss from 4 overs. Spencer's new bat was looking good! However as he 'played on' the game was in the balance and it was the chance for the Waltham Babes to put us right.
Ollie Brittain scored 20 in 27 balls before being caught just before drinks - 76 for 2 from 15 overs. With Gavlar and Kieran Webb now in the middle both achieved firsts. Gavlar his first ever fifty and Kieran his first ever six (first number five and six). With both now scoring freely they saw the game home. Gavlar 50 from 89 balls and Kieran 71 from only 63 balls. Great Waltham 180 for 2 from 32.3 overs - victory by 8 wickets and smiles all round.
