Tillingham v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 15 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 23 runs
Match report
Next up on the list, Tillingham away. Not a happy hunting ground for the 1st team over the previous few years and with all the rain that had been about we were once again anticipating a tricky pitch. Old GWCC nemesis and the owner of the finest extra cover drive in T Rippon cricket, Dave Cummins, won the toss and chose to bat first.
We started well as Josh trapped Hylton plum in front but from there on we struggled to make the telling breakthrough. This wasn’t so much the fault of the opening bowlers as both Ollie and Josh bowled exceptionally well and very economically. Ollie’s 10 overs, straight through, only cost him 25 runs with 3 maidens. Tillingham never got away from us as they were 52-1 after 15 overs, 65-1 after 20 overs and 92-1 after 25 overs. The trouble is they were only ever 1 down during this period and were always likely to hit the GO BIG button. Shots along the ground weren’t getting much value and the Tillingham batsman were more than happy to take the aerial route. Dave proved he wasn’t a one trick cover drive by lofting Chappy for a straight six. Cameos from Mee & Shafi and Cummin’s customary 92 pushed Tillingham up towards a score which was going to be hard to chase on a pitch continually getting lower.
Luckily Josh Fitz return ran through the rest of the top order, middle order, lower and tail as his return saw him take 6 wickets for 7 runs in 5 overs (I think those figures are right). Aiming at the stumps, full and straight, he had 2 bowleds, a caught behind as well as 3 caught at mid off as Josh recorded his best figures in a Waltham shirt. In the end we were able to restrict Tillingham to 204 all our from there 45 overs and we knew this would be a tricky chase judging by how the pitch had been playing in the first half of the game.
After what we thought was a nice tea, we opened up our chase hopeful of a victory. Gary noted post - match that our team is generally made up of more touch players, rather than powerful players, Dave probably being the exception in the top order. This pitch was not made for the touch players. The rain over the previous week had made it slow and low. Despite this Reedy was still trying to run the ball down to 3rd man, with limited success. We lost 2 wickets in an over (a theme this season?), as Reedy didn’t nick behind, followed by me, who most certainly did. Dave came in on a King triple but successfully saw that off before launching one of the largest sixes I’ve ever seen.
It was a shame Dave couldn’t last long enough to do some real damage, chasing a wide one and edging through to slip. Next came a partnerships of Blooms, which gave us a fighting chance to win the game, 61 runs in a tad over 12 overs, meant that we required 55 from the remaining 8 overs, with anything more than 6 going to prove exceptionally tough once the field had been set back. Dan went trying to force the scoring rate up, to a ball that skidded through. The lower order tried to put the pace on the ball, but there was none coming from the bowler or off the pitch and we struggled mightily. In the end we finished 23 runs short and there’s not much I can say about the defeat. It was an environment that never suited us and we came up against a team who knew their own conditions well. The difference in the end was probably Cummins’ 92. Frustrating but enough positives can be taken from the day. We move on to the Waltham derby.
