Great Baddow 2nd v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 11 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
An inspired spell of 7 for 10 (personal best ever including schools playground cricket) from Jake De’ath massively shifted the momentum of this game and ultimately led us to win comfortably by 6 wickets.
On another cold day (yours truly having to wear a long-sleeve pullover), Neil won the toss and invited the home team to have a bat. Rhys got us off to a perfect start with the Baddow opener gloving to Ryan behind, perfect 0-1 off 2 balls. Scott came in and soon nearly edged a Rhys out-swinger behind. I’d be composing a different tale here had that occurred.
For the next 20 overs, Scott batted beautifully, aided by some indiscipline bowling, Scott brought up his 50 with 32 overs still left. Many of us were thinking 230 if not 250. At the other end was Taylor, a contrast to Scott. The greater the effort the more out of form he looked, thankfully for us we were able to bowl some maiden balls to him. Both Lewis and Robbo having to bowl sooner than we wanted. With Scott now set for a certain hundred, Jake was introduced. Bowling in-swingers a’la Akram, Starc, Bolt, going further back John Lever or Gary Gilmour, take your pick – Jake single-handedly not only swung the game back in our favour, caught the tea ladies off guard. It was a delight to watch a young bowler pitch the ball up and allow it to swing. Five of his victims bowled with Lewis catching the dangerous Scott on the mid-wicket boundary and Keiran defying gravity to leap at mid-off. Great Baddow collapsed 123-1 off 20 overs to 150 all-out under 34 overs. That would have been very uncomfortable viewing for the home supporters.
With sandwiches still being prepared and tea yet to brew, our openers were to face 12 overs before a well-deserved mini-roll. It would be lovey to come in at 20-0. If only life in the 2s was that predictable. A lovely time cover drive to get the scoreboard ticking, much to the bewilderment of us watching saw both batsmen came back for two, not even Jos Buttler would have attempted a second there.
At the tea break we had subsided to 15-3, both Keiran and Ryan back in the pavilion. Soon after tea, the moment had swung back to the home side when Nindi edge to the keeper, 24-4. It would be massively demoralising and unfair on Jake had we succumbed. Thankfully, Lewis back in the side with total reassurance and yours truly finding some form, there was very little drama chasing the additional 127 required. There was some delightful drives and pulls from Lewis, how we missed a batsmen of his calibre in the middle order last year. In any other game, 2 catches and 60 not out chasing would have sealed the MoM. We won with 35 balls remaining.
I am so pleased with our youngsters, if you remove me and Nind, the average age of our side would be in the twenties.
So what have we learnt? Pitch the bowl up bowlers, good batsmen and average batsmen can play the short ball, however only good batsmen can play the ball pitched up regularly. In Rhys, Harry, Cameron, Jake we have a hugely talented seam bowling unit. Your day will come this season. In Lewis and Harrison we now have two slow bowlers who will only get better.
Congratulations to all the sides that won this weekend. There is a marvellous atmosphere in the club and one I am very proud to be a member.
