Rayleigh 6th XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 04 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
The 2019 cricket season got underway with the mighty Great Waltham 'Green Cap' 3rd Xl travelling down the A130 to Rayleigh to play their 6th XI at Rawreth Lane. Cricket is a game to be played in the sun and warmth of summer. Star Wars day however was very cold with wind, hail and rain thrown into the the mix, enough to test even the most enthusiast stormtrooper!
Captain Deano won the toss and invited Rayleigh to bat. With lots of bowling options available, Alfie Eaglesham and Kent opened the attack. With everyone a little 'rusty', a good line and length needed to be bowled. After an early change, Elles got the first break through with Williams trapped leg before wicket.
With Kent bowling into the wind, Andrews was bowled for 5 and as the teams left the pitch for hail Rayleigh were 30 for 2 from 6 overs. With various breaks in play because of the elements an early tea was taken and the home side found themselves 90 for 3 from 20 overs. The experienced Verrinder however was still at the crease looking ominous and the game was in the balance.
With the weather forecast looking more promising the game pushed on. Elles got his second wicket bowling Treweck for a duck and Kent did the same having Atholl caught by Elles at mid on. Rayleigh 110 for 5 from 25 overs.
With the bitter wind, lots of enthusiasm was needed in the field. Captain Harman lead the way and Verrinder was caught at fine leg off the bowling of Kent for 37. With this key wicket now taken, the Green Caps could see the end of the tunnel and Rayleigh finished their innings on 163 for 7 from 39 overs. Payne, Richards and Alfie Webb all contributed well to some tidy bowling.
The Great Waltham innings needed to start well and calmly and this it did. Kieran Webb started well and Spencer Eaglesham started calmly. In fact Spen-Dog received 22 balls before getting off the mark but this was just what the team needed for victory. Webb however was taking a different approach and scoring very freely. 47 runs scored in the first 10 overs without loss - up with the run rate.
Webb was batting with great confidence and timing the ball superbly. Both opening batsman were starting to increase the run rate. 47 for 0 became 82 for 0 after 15 overs. As the innings progressed the only danger of Great Waltham losing the game was through the weather. Eaglesham was caught behind for 36 and this saw Becky Clout arrive in the middle.
Clout and Webb kept the scoreboard ticking over and this saw a partnership of 62 being made. Clout faced 40 balls for her 18 runs that almost saw Great Waltham over the line. Why make things easy for yourself when you can make them difficult? Two further wickets fell before Kieran Webb deservedly hit the winning run and carried his bat for a fantastic 93 not out.
Thank you Rayleigh for your hospitality. When we meet again in early July I guarantee the weather will be better! #hailstonesarenotcricketweather.
