Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Basildon & Pitsea 3rd on Sat 25 May 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Match day 4. The Green Caps against Basildon & Pitsea 3rd Xl. A first for both clubs as their paths had previously never met. With Deano winning the toss, the visitors were put into bat and the Basildon opening pair of Waterman and McIver started well. Tokley took the new ball and was very economical - 7 overs for 14 runs. Richards too bowled well in his 7 over spell but neither could find the break through required. Basildon & Pitsea 41 without loss after 14 overs.
A change of tactics and a little seam and spin was introduced to the attack. Elles and Barker soon broke through as Barker bowled Waterman for 16 and Elles took the wicket of Britton for 10. Barker again bowled L Edmunds for a duck and 41 without loss had become 65 for 3 from 20 overs. Blogger Dave was keen to know what type of spin was being bowled by the youngster and it was game on.
Skipper Hayton was now at the crease and his power was evident. Barker finally got the wicket of opener McIver and the Basildon & Pitsea total looked as if it would be heavily influenced by their captains ability to 'stick around'. Rolfe, Great Waltham's very own Freddie Flintoff, was now bowling and with a few 'looseners' in his first over Hayton struck a few well timed fours. After 33 overs B & P were 117 for 4 and they were going strong.
Two new bowlers were now in the attack, Alfie Webb and Gavlar. Cricket is a great leveller and this was so evident when the the towering B Edmonds was beautifully bowled by Webb Junior Junior. Another first was the wicket of T Edmunds as the youngster was tangled in a cricketing web - caught Kieran, bowled Alfie, watched by fielder Simon and sun seeker Lisa. Tom Holland would have been impressed!
More firsts were still to come. With the last over to be bowled by Barker, Basildon & Pitsea were 145 for 7 and their second batting point was definitely in sight. Two singles from the first two balls and then the excitement commenced. Ball three - Hayton bowled for 53. Ball four - blogger Thompson bowled for 0. Ball five - a scream for lbw and the umpire waved his finger - Brown out for a golden duck. Barker's first hat trick and final figures of 21 for 6 from 7.5 overs. Basildon & Pitsea had set a target 148 for the Green Caps to win.
Webb and Barker opened the batting and started very quickly. 31 for 0 from 4 overs. Kieran however misjudged a ball from T Edmunds that clipped the leg stump and this found the calm Gavlar strolling to the wicket. Barker was timing the ball well and Gavlar looked in fine form. 84 for 1 from 16 overs. T Edmunds was still bowling with pace and Barker (52) was bowled by the Basildon & Pitsea opening bowler.
Enter centre stage the Great Waltham experience. Deano made a quick 12 runs and then 'Freddie' Rolfe showed his intent with 4 swash buckling shots to the boundary. Gavlar was playing the anchor role and as the new boy was given out leg before wicket for 16, Richards hit the winning runs with a boundary. Galvar not out 34, Richards not out 4. Great Waltham 3rd Xl 148 for 5 from 29.2 overs. Keep going you Green Caps.
I will end with a quote as our secretary often does...……………..
"That means I can drive a flock of sheep through the town centre, drink for free in no less than 64 pubs and get a lift home with the police when I become inebriated. What more could you want?" Andrew Flintoff.
