Oaklands 1st v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 08 Jun 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 44 runs
Match report
Match day 6 already and a break in the weather was needed. Great Waltham 3rd Xl travelled up the A414 to Danbury to visitor Oaklands CC. With the home side winning the toss they had no hesitation in putting the Green Caps into bat. A green, drying wicket looked potentially difficult to bat on and it was only the second time this season that Waltham would be the target setters.
Oaklands decision to field looked vindicated as the opening order crumbled to 15 for 4 from 11 overs. Eaglesham (2), Webb Junior (10), J Reed (0) and Fall (0) all got 'bogged down' in the opening overs as Leighton and Allan bowled with control and accuracy. Ray Winstone would have offered extremely long 'in play' odds at this stage for Great Waltham to win the game.
Enter the Waltham middle order and Jake De'ath made the job of batting look very easy. He hit a fantastic 75 from 36 balls as fours and sixes were smashed to all parts of the ground. With one boundary running next to car park the local dent repair garage must have been seeing pound signs! The fact that this was Jake's maiden 50 was hard to believe - great timing and extreme power was on display.
As De'ath departed Phil 'Freddie' Rolfe entered centre stage and he too slay the Oaklands bowling - 55 runs from 48 delivers. The important eight wicket partnership between Rolfe and Tokley saw 39 runs being added and it was great to see the Waltham youngsters getting time in the middle. Elles was now benefiting from the 'Freddie' patter and a further 27 runs came from these two. Final score - Great Waltham 3rd Xl all out for 184 from 35.4 overs and four batting points obtained.
The Oaklands opening pair of Lanham and Sullivan were very slowly building their innings. 28 without loss from 15 overs. With both batsman scoring two, extras was by far the highest score, so this is something to work on in the coming weeks. A change of bowling saw Elles and A Webb each take a wicket and then it became the Reed show. Joe bowling quickly from one end, Gavlar bowling spin from the other. Allan (23) and Ketley (16) were both bowled trying to improve the run rate. The important wicket of the dangerous Ketley was captured with 100 on the board and with 5 down the game swung in the Green Caps favour.
100 for 5 after 29 overs became 142 all out from 38.2 overs. Gavlar spun his way to figures of 5 for 26 from 7.2 overs and Joe took 3 important wickets for 31 runs. Well bowled the Reed's. Game won by 44 runs. 5 wins from 6. All to play for next week against Hornchurch Athletic 4th Xl in a T Rippon Division 10. #comeonyougreencaps.
