Rainham 4th v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 31 Aug 2019 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 195 runs
Match report
The final game of the 2019 season and all to play for. Great Waltham 3rd Xl on 252 points with 10 wins this season. Hornchurch 4th Xl on 252 points with 9 wins. It couldn't be closer. With the Green Caps away at Rainham 4th Xl and Hornchurch at home to South Woodham Ferrers 3rd Xl, only maximum points would do. Cometh the hour, cometh the man.
Deano won the toss and had to choose to bat first as a score of 200 would give maximum batting points. A good start was needed and Josh De'ath and Kieran Webb certainly gave the Green Caps this. 69 for 0 from 9 overs. At this stage the innings wobbled as Webb (35), Reed (1) and Eaglesham (0) returned to the pavilion in quick succession. 78 for 3 from 13 overs. With Josh still at the crease and Deano entering centre stage this could be a crucial partnership. Both senior batsman played their shots freely and De'ath made a fine 62 in quick time. Josh was out in the 19th over, bowled by Little as the second batting point came up - 125 for 4.
Kent, batting at 6, was now in the middle and the pair put on a match changing 120 runs for the fifth wicket. Deano scored 75 in only 31 balls and as mentioned at the start - cometh the hour, cometh the man or should one say cometh the Deano?! Maximum batting points were achieved in the 26th over and a further 45 runs were scored before the skipper was caught off the bowling of Vickers Junior. Kent (56) made his maiden half century but the remaining batsman failed to score as freely as the upper order and both Vickers and Oates bowled well for Rainham. Great Waltham had set their biggest total of the season - 273 all out from 36.3 overs.
The Rainham innings never really got started and after 8 overs they were 28 for 2. Both Rolfe and Payne had taken a wicket each and with Gavlar now in the attack, the Green Caps turned the screw. With Gavlar bowling Hare for 6 and a 'mix up' between Jackson and Oates saw the latter run out.
With Rolfe bowling 9 tight overs for only 16 runs Rainham found themselves 49 for 7 from 18 overs. Richards was now turning his arm and he had the joy of taking the last wicket by bowling Courtney for 14. Rainham 78 all out in 23.1 overs and a victory for Great Waltham by 195 runs.
With smiles on everyone's faces, all the Green Caps knew that the 26 point victory would hopefully secure promotion. This was confirmed by chairman Brown as Great Waltham 3rd Xl had a better win percentage than Hornchurch Athletic 4th Xl. Their maximum point victory against South Woodham Ferrers hadn't been enough. In elite sport there are fine margins between success and failure!
Thank you to everyone who has played for the 3rd Xl this season. 16 games played and 11 players fielded every week. T Rippon Division 9 we're coming for you!
