Great Waltham Cricket Club Sunday XI v Little Baddow on Sun 06 Sep 2020 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 5 Wickets
Match report
With the late arrangement of the game and a hastily gathered team the decision for Waltham to bowl first was welcomed by both sides.
Baddow's openers started positively against Joe and Isaac with Pearson strong all around the wicket and Harmer especially latching on anything short to cut. But with both bowling well it took a spectacular one handed grab from the debutant, Richard at backward point, to remove Harmer bringing Smith to the wicket.
These two made decent progress with Pearson looking to play inventively and Smith particularly strong on the leg side. The introduction of spin from the top end slowed Baddow's strike rate and as the pressure built Pearson was bowled by Matty.
Joel replaced JT and with spin at both ends the run rate started to dip as both bowlers found a decent length. Replacing Matty, Alfie bowled another fine spell and was rewarded by bowling Smith just as he was looking to accelerate.
With Richard and Cam, taking our bowler count to 8, two more wickets fell with a catch and run out by Cam fielding in the covers.
The younger Detheridge brother, Tim, steadied the innings and provided acceleration but with Joe returning up the hill to bowl 3 of the opposition in his final two overs it helped restrict Baddow's total to 219.
At the halfway point both teams were probably satisfied at the position.
Waltham got off to a poor start with Joe being caught in the covers 3rd ball but with Cam joining Richard they put on 89 in 12 overs for the 2nd wicket with highlights being Richard's straight and cover drives and Cam finding boundaries behind square leg.
With Cam bowled through the gate by slow left arm bowler Tim it was up to Kieran to support Richard who was starting to up his run rate having completed his half century and pinching Joe's bat for the remain of his innings.
Having successfully supported Richard, Kieran started to open up with a couple of boundaries only to be given out LBW to the slow left armer. With 72 still required it was important that the incoming batsmen continued to bat sensibly and both Joel and then Josh scored invaluable runs to see Waltham reduce the deficit.
During this time Richard was going from strength to strength with a disciplined innings evolving into a near chanceless one punctuated with powerful hitting. It was only near the end that he decided to go arial including a massive 6 into Langley's. A further couple of 6's saw the game won with 6 overs remaining.
In total, 98 of Richard's runs came in boundaries with his unbeaten 132 coming off 119 balls.
A big thank you to the players for making this a competitive game and to Joe's Woodstock bat for contributing to a match winning innings!
