Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Totham on Sat 01 Aug 2020 at 1 p.m.
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
On another beautiful summer’s day, the youngest of the Brown clan - Cameron (bowling for the first time on Saturday) produce match winning figures 5-24 off 6 overs, to set us on course for a comfortable 8 wicket win in time for us to watch The Gunners lift the FA Cup for the 14th time. Who says Spurs supporters don’t like Arsenal:)
At the toss our heart sank as the opposition had no hesitation on batting on another beautiful wicket, fast outfield bathed in warm sunshine. However, 3 balls into the Totham innings saw Pearson walk down to Cameron only to find the edge to Josh taking the first of three catches behind the stumps. Totham had an experienced top order, however 0 for 1 soon became 17 for 4, with Lloyd Harriram (ex-Little Waltham) making his debut found his length and finished with 2 for 23. Cameron was charging in and our fielding was excellent all-round, highlighted by an excellent catch by Joel at cover running backwards, grabbing ‘Aussie-style’. At 44 for 7, I had visions on even watching the pre-match analysis on the BBC. The Totham Chairman, Dickinson settled in to bat time and was marshalling his side to respectable total when my opening partner, now officially an all-rounder (Joel) lured him into a mistimed cut into his stumps. How refreshing it is to see a youngster wanting to bowl off-breaks, I do hope he continues to take his bowling seriously - I’m sure we will yield more league wickets in seasons to come.
At tea we sat in the newly acquired gazebo confident that barring a collapse we should be sitting at the top of the table by 530pm. Joel continuing his fine form, propelled us by cutting and pulling Cole for 19 off his first two overs, I was happy to watch at the other end and rotate the strike. We had added 51 when T Wheeler (probably no more than 14) bowling googlies, trapped Joel plumb in front.
Tom Clampitt returning after 4 years away with a torn ligament sadly could not open his account and was bowled by J Wheeler (brother).
We also welcomed back Luke in whites for the first time this season, he relishes spinners and is further motivated with both long-on and long-off, the ball sailed high and handsome between the arc from long-off and cow-corner. We won with just under 19 overs to spare and consolidated our position of the top of the table after the first round of matches.
With a number of regular 2nd team player’s unavailable, we have the squad to create special memories for the rest of this season and next. Our youngsters are now stepping up in the field and the energy and enthusiasm motivates me to remain fit and healthy to watch them develop.
Well done to the 1st (remain top by winning at Tillingham) and the 3rds (who registered their first win if the season) - what a wonderful weekend, concluded with dinking ales in the Dhanjal hospitality watching Aubameyang lift silverware🏆
I’m off to Southern France next week to drink fine wines and eat local cheeses. A new author will report on our home game next week with Tillingham.
Enjoy the week, ap
