Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Rayleigh on Sat 29 Aug 2020 at 1 p.m.

Match report
What do the following batsmen have in common: Saeed Anwar, Herschelle Gibbs, Quinton de Kock, Jonny Bairstow and Rohit Sharma? They have all scored three consecutive hundreds as opening batsmen in one day cricket. Yesterday our 'overseas' Kiwi Duggan joined exalted company by thumping 134 on a slowish wicket against a hapless Rayleigh attack. If many of you are thinking, I thought it was two consecutive hundreds, as was I. The Kiwi reminded me his first as opener was 102 v Stock last August.
Sadly what was brewing up to be a climax, with the opposition requiring 59 of 60 balls with six wickets in hand, was finally curtailed by the inclement weather. Having gained maximum batting points, we remain top of the table by 10 points with two games remaining.
The toss seemed irrelevant as I wanted to bat and the opposition wanted to field. After a sedate start 6 runs off the first 4 overs, Duggs stepped on the accelerator and thereafter the opposition only bowled two maidens. With the heavy rain in the week, the wicket and outfield was predictably slower than last week and required the batters to watch the ball a little close onto the bat. Without the covers, batting would have been as enjoyable as policy makers making post covid plan for pupils returning to school next week. We'd added 138 with the aid of a few catches shelled, when Wright took a stunning one-handed caught and bowled to prevent me purchasing a jug of ale. In recent weeks, Arthur's shins have developed pad rash. We were all eager for him to sooth that pain by getting a few runs. Disappointingly two balls later, we were sitting together on the bench without pads. 138-0 became 138-2 with 15 overs left and Kieran (18) together with Duggs, added 51 in 7 overs adjusted our forecast back to 240. Lloyd (21) possibly the quickest runner in the club behind Kieran and Joel, ran like Usain and with Duggs finally perishing on the deep mid-wicket boundary, ensured we have an above par total.
At tea, I was quietly confident we could get maximum points and with Jake (2-12) bowling beautifully and Lloyd (2-29) when not allowing the umpire to stretch his arms, swinging the ball away, reduced the visitors to 36-4 in 10 overs. A couple of fine catches from Josh and Kieran. If the weather remains dry, we were firm favourites. Littler and Wright then added an unbeaten 149. The rain arrived, however I felt obliged to stay on as the visitors did when we visited last month, when the opposition bowled in the rain for 10 overs. Bowling with a wet ball is not easy and all our bowlers found it difficult. We'd been playing in the rain for about 14 overs, when their own batsmen was finding it difficult to remain upright and then confessed when I asked, we should have gone off 10 overs ago. In agreement with the opposition captain, we decided to call it a halt and watch Arsenal collect their second piece of silverware in 4 weeks!
Off to 'The Postage Stamp' ground next week in Totham, with no third team game, we should have a good eleven to consolidate our position. Duggs will be hoping to join Kumar Sangakkara and join the '4 consecutive tons club'. The weather forecast is drier and we should have an uninterrupted game.
Have a great week, the Aussies are in town.
