Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v South Loughton CC on Sat 01 May 2021 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report The most beautiful sight on Saturday were three bright perfectly formed rainbows as newcomers South Loughton 1st marched to a convincing 8 wicket win with 13 overs left.

Lots of excitement and enthusiasm. Having won the toss on a sunny day, my new partner Matty got us off to a fine start and we were well placed at 60 for 0 off 12 overs to post an above par score. Having settled in, yours truly played a casual flick and skied to mid-on. Two balls later the 'Romford Express' (Nindi) was brilliantly caught at second slip via the keepers gloves. Simon and Matty steadied the slide, however both fell in quick succession, Lloyd soon followed - we were now 90-5 and in real danger of posting an embarrassing total.

However, the innings was given impetus by a cameo from Kieran who had clearly put in a lot of hard work on his game. I asked him what he had changed? "Started using a mens bat"! The ball was pinging of his blade and in 24 balls he had raced to 39 littered with 7 fours officially (unofficially one was a six!). He was sight of his maiden league 50 and with debutant Jacob Bell, we were now back on course for a par total. Sadly both fell when well set and it was left to Chappy to marshall us to a respectable if slightly below par total. The pick of the opposition bowlers, Smith 2-15 off 10 including 5 maidens and Vasanthan 4-44.

We needed to start well with the ball, create pressure, hold our catches and chase everything. The visiting captain Stokes (good bat) and fellow opener Barker MUST have thought it was a charity game. Our bowlers were having an off day and pretty much every poor deliver (short) had to be retrieved form the boundary. Matty (all-rounder) our 4th change, was the sole owner of a solitary maiden in 32 overs. We will never know if the opposition batting had depth. Hopefully, in the return fixture in July we will have answered that question.

One poor game doesn't ruin a summer. Just looking at the availability, I'm confident we can bounce back at Rayleigh, as long as the rain stays away:(

Finally it would be remis of me to leave with a mentioning the special efforts of those 1st team 'all-rounders' Joe and JT - together with Catherine' commentary, like the Rainbow, you brightened our post match drinks.

P.S. Apologies for the lateness of this report, like my timing on Saturday, it will improve:)
