Rayleigh CC- 2nd XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 08 May 2021 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 51 runs

Match report On a day when only one other fixture in division 3 was completed - we missed a great opportunity to register our first victory of the season to back up an excellent spell of bowling by Matty 5-15 and Chappy 2-20. Alas in the end we were soundly beaten by Rayleigh 2nds by 51 runs chasing 160.

The game reduced to 40 overs, we won the toss on a cold blustery day, our bowling was considerably better from the opening game. Had we held our catches, we may well have been chasing a total less that 120. Ellis had got the home side off to a quick start and looked comfortable, although playing a number of drives in the air. Lloyd (2-19) got us the breakthrough by removing both openers, however the home side looked to be in a good position at 119-3 with 21 overs remaining. Matty and Chappy in tandem are going to be a handful for any opposition this season. No doubt both will experience off days. However, yesterday the swung the game with flight and guile to have reduced the home side to 139-9. Messrs Acraman and Nunn held on to use their allocation and post 160.

At tea we were quietly confident of overhauling the target to give Chappy his first victory. We got off to a good start and yours truly was feeling in pretty good form when attempting to flick a length ball to mid-wicket was adjudged LBW...sadly no DRS in Club cricket. Nindi started well and together with Matty looked to have steadied the innings and were quietly accumulating when the home spinners halted the run-rate. We were never able to wrest the initiative and the asking rate climbed and the boundaries were as rare as blue skies. Wickets fell at regular intervals and Binneman gave Rayleigh their first victory of the season with a fine cleaning job - 4-11, winning by a considerable margin.

As a senior batsmen, I do solemnly swear to bat with more determination when well set. We have to find a way to keep the scoreboard ticking. The opposition bowling attack was consistent though certainly not unplayable. We have the talent and require a smidgen of luck to kick start our season. This is not the time to over analyse, lets regroup for our home clash against Bentley and allow Chappy to sup a winning larger next week.

Congratulations to our Ladies and the 1st team for making it 2 out of 2.

Have a great week, the sun is shinning and soon we will be allowed spectators:)
