Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Totham CC- 2nd XI on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets
Match report
With our captain back at the helm, Robbo making his first appearance and Matty restored to opening the batting - we won (by 6 wickets) a crucial encounter against Great Totham who starting the day were just below us in the table.
The only thing that didn't go our way was the toss. In glorious sunshine and beautiful surface, how our batters would have liked first use. Our bowlers and fielders responded with a fine opening spell from Isaac and Jake, building pressure that manifested a run out to Lloyd 'Harper' Hariram, swooping from cover, one-hand pickup and a direct hit saw the opposition captain walking back. 21-1 soon became 28-2 when Phillips (a fine player) drove to Lewis, the ball melting into his hands...so good to have him back in the side. I do hope he is not lured to pre-season training before the end of the league season. At 72-4 we had control of the game. Kevin and Barry Mays then added 49 for the 5th wicket, a projected score of 200 was likely when Lloyd's well disguised slower ball resulted in Barry caught and bowled. Chappy (outstanding figures 4-19 off 10 overs) returned for a second spell and instigated a collapse.
At tea, we were asked to chase 137 for victory. This season, we have failed chasing 160 and 150, admittedly on slightly more challenging strips. The sun continued to shine and the wicket was firm and true and opposition attack not looking like they would take 10 wickets. Earlier Matty had bowled below his high standards this year, however his batting has gone from strength to strength...I do wish he would temper his obsession with the late cut. We had added 78 for the first wicket, when I was plumb in front mis-sweeping two consecutive balls. Such a shame, we both had chatted and agreed we should make an attempt to both be at the close. Matty, scoring at a shade under a run-a-ball was caught, wait for it...late cut :( By then the result was not in doubt, some casual batting donating the opposition bowling points.
Next week, we travel to Canvey Island, a ground we have never won. Had there not been admin error from yours truly (match report not submitted), the gap would have been 8 points instead of 3. Together with the rest of the team, we want to ensure those 5 points do not come back and haunt us in August. The weather forecast is set fair and I am optimistic about breaking our duck on the Island.
CongrATULations to the 1st team for maintaining 100% winning start and to the 3rds for notching their first league victory this campaign. Then yesterday, our Sunday team successfully chased 213, Harrison (89) falling agonisingly short on his first ton for the club. Shame the ladies game was abandoned as we would have had 5 out 5. Oh I love the summer.
Enjoy the week and the sun. Those Kiwis look good.
