Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Rayleigh CC- 2nd XI on Sat 10 Jul 2021 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report An excellent partnership of 74 between Nindi (84) and Alfie (16), when we were 84-8 heading for a humiliating defeat, clawed us to a respectable if below par total of 160. Sadly, an imperious innings of 71 from 63 balls from opener Lynch glided the visitors to an emphatic 9 wicket win and left us propping the table for the first time this season with seven games left.

Having won the toss on a grey day, we started in light drizzle which soon halted. Finally, a start when runs started to flow from the beginning was halted when yours truly casual flick to a straight ball, departed again for less than 20 and handed the visitors an unexpected early break. The Rayleigh bowlers seized the initiative and wickets fell at regular intervals until Alfie joined Nindi. Nindi in past weeks has like many of us, looked good without making a significant contribution. Here, he struck boundaries, one beautiful drive from the crease over the spinners head for six was followed later for a huge on drive of the young seamer over the ropes in danger of windscreen damage. He coaxed a determined and excitable Alfie to his highest league for the 2nds, 16.

At tea, we knew 160 was below par, however a couple of quick wickets would assess the nerves of incoming batsmen. Last week, bowlers nearly pulled of a heist against the league leaders. Yesterday only two of those bowlers were present. Lynch, initially circumspect pounced on anything short and was soon into his stride and any hope we had of causing an upset were quickly dispelled.
The Rayleigh captain, Walker was unbeaten and a margin of 9 wickets did not reflect our late order fightback. Alfie was our sole wicket taker to cap a fine day for him.

There are 4 points between us, Great Totham and Bentley who we face next week in a crucial game which will have a bearing on our status in Division 3. With no 1st team game next week, we should have a stronger side. A win is vital, not just for points, but also morale and belief. I’ve been saying we are too good to be playing Div 4 cricket next year, however we need more than one batsmen in the top 4 to stand up and take responsibility in converting starts.

Keep the faith as we prepare for history tonight (fingers crossed - Eng to win on pens).
