Rettendon 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
Rettendon won the toss and elected to bat first against Great Waltham on a pitch which would offer a fair contest between bat and ball.
Rettendon started positively reaching 83-2 at the end of the powerplay. The Waltham spinners slowed the game down with Mark Chapman (2-21) bowling Abrehart (32) to bring Chris Sutherby and Dan Lawson to the crease. Both batsman started tentatively, with little risk, yet punished any loose deliveries before mounting their assault in the final 10 overs. The 5th wicket partnership yielded 135 runs for Rettendon with Sutherby making 90 and Lawson 68, helping the hosts reach a slightly above-par 256.
Jamie Lawson (3-24) started strongly for Rettendon, removing three of the Waltham top 4 in quick succession. Dan Bloom (31) and debutant Dan Humphreys (32) set about rebuilding the innings before both were dismissed by some tight and threatening bowling Will Osbourne (2-33). Some middle/lower order cameos including a swashbuckling 38 from Lewis Chapman kept Walthams hopes of victory alive. Another flurry of wickets brought 18 year-old No. 9 Rhys Chapman to the crease, with 100 runs still required at 10 an over. Some imperious ball-striking from the unflappable Chapman saw Waltham requiring 45 from the final 3 overs, with only 2 wickets in hand. 13 runs from the 43rd and 14 from the 44th meant that Waltham needed 15 to win from 6 balls.
6.426
18 from 15 balls saw Waltham win an absolute thriller at Church Meadow. Rhys Chapman, Walthams No. 9, the match winner with a blistering knock of 85 from 42 balls, including 11 fours and 4 sixes.
