Hornchurch Athletic 2nd v Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sat 25 Jun 2022 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 52 runs.
Match report
On a flat deck with a lightning quick outfield, it came as little surprise that Hornchurch Athletic took the opportunity to bat first at Hylands Park. A disciplined bowling performance - with some excellent ground fielding, notably from Cameron Brown - kept the scoring in relative check during the early exchanges. The dangerous Joe Reed (2-35) picked up the wicket of Klein (11) before Chalk removed the prize wicket of the in-form Davis (22). The introduction of the part-time spin of Barker (3-45) opened the game up but opener Turner found good support from Heneghan (27) and with some late hitting from Blowers (24*), Hornchurch Athletic closed on 240-8 at tea. Turner carrying his bat for a solid 91* as scoreboard pressure was created.
In reply, with a much-changed batting line-up from the previous two weeks, we were in early trouble at 12-2. I chipped in with 32 and Blooma looked fluent for his 48 as we rebuilt the innings but Turner (2-33) accounted for both batters with a crucial spell of tight bowling. A mini-collapse saw Waltham teeter from 106-3 to 127-7 but Joe Reed (28) and Jake De'ath (31) kept things interesting with a great 61-run partnership for the 8th wicket. The end came about quite suddenly as the final 3 wickets fell in quick succession with the return of Davis (3-25) ending any hopes of pulling off an unlikely run chase as Hornchurch secured a comfortable win by 52 runs.
Despite the fact we were missing 4 of our top 5 from the previous week and numbers 7, 8 and 11 all found themselves in the top 4... it was a really good effort with the bat. Recovering from 12-2 and then again from 127-7. We don't know when we're beaten and we take the game as deep as we can, picking up vital bonus points in the process. The spirit and camaraderie within the group is unlike any I can recall being a part of for a good few years. I've played in a lot of 'great' Waltham teams... this is certainly one of my favourites.
Hornchurch Athletic were the strongest all-round team we've come up against this season. They had depth in both batting and bowling and weren't carrying any passengers. Their captain was highly complimentary of our team describing us as one of the best units they've come up against this year, with special praise for our bowling attack and - in particular - Joe Reed.
Thanks to Arthur for stepping in/up at the 11th hour and to Ryan Brown for 'agreeing and accepting' to help us out... his straight drive was a thing of beauty and a reminder that he's got some serious skills in his locker.
Whilst Joel possibly 'bought' a couple of his wickets with the ever dangerous full toss, he was the unexpected individual performance that added to our bowling attack and there were encouraging signs that we've got another slow bowler emerging for the 2nd half of the season...
