Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI v Rettendon 1st XI on Sat 18 May 2024 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs

Match report Starting with the 1s, we hosted Rettendon with an unchanged side from last week’s win over Great Baddow. Josh won the toss and on a sweaty wicket that had been covered, elected to bowl. The visitors started pretty well putting away any loose balls whilst also chancing their arm successfully. Catches weren’t going to hand and we couldn’t get the breakthrough. Josh decided to bring himself on earlier than usual and he eventually bowled Alarcu with the score on 50 after a very questionable leave. Shortly after, Abrehart finally lost patience and lofted Matty straight down Lewis’ throat at long on. With the score at 73-2 we had wrestled back some of the control. The next passage of play was fairly attritional as the Rettendon skipper D. Lawson looked to anchor the innings while we tried to dry up the boundaries. The batters at the other end pushed the tempo while Lawson ensured his team got a competitive total. Jake De’ath bowled brilliantly again, sticking to his line and length despite the advances of the Rettendon batters. Having bowled so well in the first couple of games without any reward, Jake finally picked up his first wickets of the season. Druce clipped him straight to Graham at mid wicket and Sullivan spooned him to cover after a busy 32. There was one final wicket for Jake as J. Lawson skied one to Josh who caught well at point. His figures of 9 overs 3-44 were brilliant and no less than he deserves. However, Josh (despite forgetting how to do his run up), eclipsed his figures with 9 overs 2 for 20. At the half way point they had scored 200/6 and we felt confident that we could chase that total down.
In our fielding innings we were guilty of starting sloppily and not fielding cleanly. The same could not be said for Rettendon as they started with great intensity in the field and control with the ball. A.Sullivan’s spell of 9 straight overs up the hill 1 for 13 probably won them the game. He and D. Lawson didn’t really bowl any freebies to let the openers get away. After constant pressure, both openers fell in quick succession with the score on 34 leaving a big job for the rest of the side. Ollie and Duggers tried to settle but were aware that the rate had risen to almost 6 an over. When Duggers was dismissed for 20 we were left 98-3 off 30.4 overs needing 103 off the last 14.2 overs. Luckily for us, Ollie had started to motor and he was joined by the quick scoring Dan Humphreys. Ollie’s strokeplay was magnificent, not over hitting it but timing it to the boundary. He also pulled three enormous sixes on his way to 73 off 87 balls. In a strange turn of events, he lost his balance, toppled out of his crease and was stumped. We still felt that with Dan at the crease we were favourites as he powered his way to a 41 ball 50. We’d managed to get the equation to 24 from 24 balls with 6 wickets in hand, surely the favourites. The game management wasn’t quite there and after a few dots, we felt the need to try and hit boundaries. Dan and Elham went for glory and were caught trying to hit that magical six. With 12 needed off the last over it proved too much for Aaron and Lewis and we ended up 7 runs short. A tough loss to take but serves as a reminder to be tighter in the field and more positive up top with the bat.
