Springfield v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 15 Jun 2024 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won By 6 Wickets
Match report
With lots of rain around we were expecting reduced games and that’s exactly what we got. Josh won the toss and elected to bowl against Springfield but a blast of rain saw the start delayed until 14:30. Some high quality darts were thrown during the delay with messrs Chapman Jr and Reed remaining undefeated. When we finally got underway, we lasted 3 overs before more rain and lightning saw a further compulsory 30 minute delay. The upshot of all this weather was a 24 over a side game. With the shortened game, Springfield changed their approach and came out aggressively. Symonds led the charge for the hosts manipulating the field masterfully and punishing the bad ball. We did manage to get on the board courtesy of a Richardson run out/BBQ and an LBW off Josh which had more than a hint of bat in it. Symonds raced to 47 off 31 balls before Josh spun one back that was too close to cut and cleaned him up. Matty came into the attack in testing conditions, bowling in the cold wet weather with the batters hitting with the wind. He bowled his best spell of the year picking up 3 for 30 from his 6 overs which was impressive given the aggressive approach of the batters. Attwell walked past one and was stumped before Kleinig and Chalk were bowled by Matty. Powell and Lanka tried to get the hosts up to a more competitive score but tight bowling and good fielding saw us restrict them to 159/7 from their 24 overs.
Re-framing this as a T20 game, we re-jigged the batting order to take advantage of the disproportionately large power play (10 out of the 24 overs). This plan backfired on us as we slumped to 15/3 with Elles, Humphreys and O. Fitz all going cheaply. Luckily for us, Elham was in imperious form and over the next hour put on one of the most special knocks I’ve seen in a while. While wickets were falling around him he was following the brief and attacking the power play. Anything that was too pitched up was dispatched with whippy wrists, timing and impressive power. Fellow re-jigged opener Graham was supporting the rebuild ably from the other end, content to punch the ball into the gaps and run hard. Both batters demonstrated their cricketing IQ as despite the early wickets, the rate was only 6 an over. Good balls were nudged for one and bad balls were nearly always put away. Wickesy began to get into his stride as well and played some glorious drives and flicks. Both batters were operating at well over a run a ball and the fight had gone out of Springfield. Elham continued to put his foot on the gas but went one too many times and was caught at long off for 67 off 49 balls including thee monstrous sixes. The other re-jigged opener Bloom came in at 6 to join Wickesy who was approaching his 50. Knowing he didn’t have the power to match Elham and Graham, Bloom was content to push the gaps and sweep pretty much anything Springfield bowled. Graham launched and enormous six over long on then nudged a 2 to bring up a fantastic 50. With four to win, Graham pushed one off the back through the covers to win the match making a glorious 54* off 44 balls with Dan 24* at the other end. A good result given the weather and keeps us in the title hunt 4 points behind High Roding.
