Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Hornchurch Athletic 2nd XI on Sat 15 Jun 2024 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 7 Wickets

Match report Only five overs were lost for the 2s game against Hornchurch Athletic in the Great Waltham microclimate. Clouty won the toss and made the sensible decision to bowl with the rain about. Things started well as JT picked up the early wicket getting Humphries for 4. JT and Max bowled tightly up front not letting the Hornchurch numbers 2 and 3 get away. Max’s opening spell was an impressive one of 5 overs for 11, a much more economical return. The introduction of Isaac brought the 2nd wicket with the score on 45. The next passage of play was an attritional one as the Hornchurch batters ticked over but not at any great pace. The 3rd wicket partnership reaped 66 runs before a run out broke it for us. The Hornchurch number 3 Little made his 50 before he was dismissed by Lewis Tucker making his first appearance of the season. He followed this wicket up with a caught and bowled and Hornchurch found themselves 149/5. The lower order tried to push Hornchurch up to a higher total but another run out and a wicket from Clouty saw them restricted to 185/7 from their 40 overs. We sensed that 4.5 an over was probably a bit under par despite the rain.

A new opening pair of Phil Whettell and Neil Robinson started steadily for us in pursuit of the total. The partnership of 41 was a solid start before Phil was dismissed by Gill. Neil followed shortly after for 23 and we found ourselves 52/2 after 14.4 overs, slightly behind the rate required. Nindi and Clouty settled into their work brilliantly, Nindi content to play the holding role while Dave played in his typical aggressive manner. They put on 59 for the 3rd wicket in super quick time with Nindi only making 6 of those runs! Dave blasted his way to a magnificent 50 and put his side in a winning position. His 50 included 2 enormous sixes and 8 sumptuous fours before he fell for exactly 50 after only 34 balls. When he departed, Kieran continued the approach that Dave took allaying any concerns that we weren’t going to win this game. Kieran and Nindi put on 78 for the 4th wicket, the former making a brilliant 43 from just 34 balls, a great knock and I’m told included a massive six! Nindi’s score of 40* can’t be understated as he shepherded the team to the total ensuring no collapse and a 7 wicket win for the team. In a very tight division 3, every win is important!
