Rayleigh 5th XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 19 Jul 2025 at 13.00
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 56 runs

Match report A fine all-round team performance sees us to a comfortable 56 run victory away to promotion challengers Rayleigh 5th.

The met office predicted very little play, let alone a full game. We travelled assuming a day for stoppages. One of player’s mothers on arrival,
“Surely, it’s too wet to play”!
It was wet; however the rain had ceased. I informed her that Rayleigh are challenging for promotion and having given us a thorough beating at home earlier this season, they’ll be keen to play. They were, as I called tails and said, we’d have a bat. Their captain with a delightful grin on his face said,
“That’s good we wanted to bowl anyway”! To explain my philosophy, as I’m sure some of own players wanted to field. Conditions are wet and slippery, possibly difficult for bowlers to hold the new bowl, very little chance of shining a ball in wet conditions and personally, I hate fielding in the rain.

We got off to a decent start until I ran myself out. Then followed a fine partnership of 70 between Andy and Danny. Danny (34) looked well set to continue his fine form, when he holed out to short third. The game was finely balanced at 123-3 when Sam departed. However, the momentum started to swing our way when Rhys (playing his first game of the season) attacked the bowling from ball one and deflated the opposition with a partnership of 90 with Andy. Rhys finished with 55 of 43 balls, 6 fours and 2 sixes. Andy holding the innings together with a determined 74, which is his highest league score. At this level it’s rare for anyone to bat for 117 balls, most lose concentration and give their wicket away. We ended with a above par score of 224-5.

The bowlers responded to my plans to pitch the ball up, get driven but not pulled or cut. Wickets falling at regular intervals, ensure we were always on top. At 94-7, we relaxed our intensity and had I held on to a chance offered by their captain Smith (38), we would have won much earlier. With overs left and a partnership 61 threatened to spoil our day, their captain smashed one to Andy at cover off Frank and we breathed a sigh of relief. Well done to all the bowlers, Wager 3-46 and the vital wicket of the dangerous Offer. Our own Ben Stokes, Rhys, capping a fine all-round performance with 2-24, Frank mopping up with 2-35. Hugely encouraging was our young bowlers, Fin Leonard-Hill 2-26, Ted 1-20 and Finn Jones 0-16.
A special mention to Andy and DPO or taking three catches. Had I not dropped one, we would have gone without blemish in the field. Finally, to Talal for his enthusiasm and energy in the field.

Onwards and upwards, next Rayleigh Fairview at home.

Have a great week all 😊
