Great Waltham Cricket Club 2nd XI v Great Wakering CC on Sat 29 May 2021 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report The summer finally arrived and our ground looking like it should be on a postcard in a souvenir store. With supporters back on the bench a fine even contest was ultimately decided by us 'flooring' 5 catches (including the top three scorers for the visitors).

Winning the toss, a sedate start to some accurate bowling from Mayhew. We had comfortably moved to 34 when yours truly deposited a long-hop to mid-wicket. We soon lost Micky. Bloomer (making a welcome guest appearance) together with Nindi boosted the innings with boundaries and enthusiastic running between the wicket...not bad for a couple north of 55 years. Much our surprise we lost Bloomer, 76-3. Lewis back from an extended football season and courtesy of a red card the previous weekend, batted beautifully and his innings of 74 took us to a competitive total 193-7 at tea.

Our bowling looking a little light with Chappy absent getting his 2nd Jab. Jake got us the early wicket, Micky taking a smart two-handed catch at first slip. Sadly, we dropped Dunne before he has reached 8. Together with Frankel, they had taken the visitors to 53, when Jacob bowled Frankel, who was looking very comfortable. 30 runs later, Nindi took a smart catch at point running in to dismiss Dunne off Lewis. Had I held on to a simple chance at midwicket a over earlier, Pritchard would also have been in the hut.
We continued to take wicket at regular intervals and at 155-6, the odds had swung our way as Patterson had to retire hurt with a groin strain. Sutton however with some good fortune was also dropped, guided Great Wakering home with an unbeaten 33.

It has been frustrating, with the exception of South Loughton in the first game, we've been in a good positions to win the other three. This weekend is a crucial home game against Great Totham who are below us. We have Chappy and Robbo back for his first outing. Not working in the betting industry, I will make us favorites. As a team mate of mine said after the game, "we are so close". Keep the faith.
