Match report Rayne 2nd XI versus Great Waltham 3rds on a rainy afternoon in July. What couldn’t there be to like about that? The visiting captain Whettell won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Rayne in on a sticky wicket. The forecast was for lighter skies, so the game started in the drizzle.

Rayne started positively but the strike bowling of L Britain and Kent kept Rayne under their umbrellas at 41 for 1 from the first 10 overs – Fielding caught for 7. With M Duggan and Tokley now in attack 41 for 1 became 62 for 2 from 20 overs.

The sticky wicket was turning to glue and the ball very difficult to get away. The Rayne middle order of Brazier (34 no) and Farr (28) tried to accelerate the innings but with Duggan (24 for 3 from 9 overs), Tokley (23 for 1 from 9 overs) and O Brittain 21 for 0 from 6 overs) bowling very well a total of 148 for 6 looked achievable.

With the drier weather arriving O Brittan and Kiwi Duggan started purposely. 44 for the first wicket saw the All-Black return to the pavilion. O Brittain was remarkably calm building a fine innings as Whettell (7) and Gibson (16) came and went. Keeping the run rate ticking over and hitting the wayward ball to the boundary saw Waltham needing 50 from the last 10 overs.

Like a fine Rolls Royce engine O Brittain (77 no) was purring and in total control. Hill (17 no) at the other end added valuable runs at the death as Brittain hit the final 4 off the third ball of the final over. Great Waltham 152 for 3 from 39.3 overs. It's all in the timing! Great close game against the Rayne Gents.
