Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 9 runs
Match report
Week 4 saw Great Waltham make the short journey across Chelmsford to play Great Baddow. Great Waltham won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch which was at best, unplayable; and at worst, dangerous. The severity of how poor the pitch played, was exemplified by the league's leading run scorer Bhaj Singh, getting removed cheaply, early in the match after a barrage of quick and accurate bowling by Rhys Chapman. A flurry of quick wickets brought Wilson (31) and Olivelle (26) to the crease, whose gritty partnership rescued the Baddow innings. Some lower order scampering from Jacob Haley (27*) saw Baddow to a very competitive and possibly over-par 170. The slower bowlers were effective for Waltham, with Josh Fitzwater (2-23) and Mark Chapman (3-30) returning miserly figures from their 9 over allocations. Rhys Chapman was the pick of the Waltham bowlers, with figures of 2-10 from his overs, including 2 maidens at the death.
Huartson struck early to remove the in-form Dave Clout. Daniel Bloom (29) and Graham Wickes (38) survived the emphatically poor pitch after both getting hit in the head and chest from balls rearing off a length from Baddow's pacers. Baddows spinners changed the complex of the game, with Ramesh Gunalan (3-25) and Jacob Healey (3-32) breaking the 2nd wicket partnership and then removing the dangerous Waltham middle order. The Waltham tail wagged, Kurt James (21) sending a large drive into the tennis courts, however, Waltham ended 9 runs short of their required total.
A special mention to both teams keepers, Daniel Bloom and Arun Olivelle, who grafted all day behind the stumps on the unpredictable pitch. The low amount of byes is a testament to their ability.
