Match report
Here we go again. The return of the ellipsis...
Match Report sent to the League Website:
An excellent unbroken partnership of 166 between Ben Jackman (120*) and Tom Dumas (76*) proved the difference in a game of precisely 500 runs. South Woodham recovered from 25-2 and 105-4 to post a formidable 271-4. Jackman and Dumas - mixing elegant boundaries with some excellent running between the wickets - put SWF firmly in the box seat at tea.
In reply, needing 6-an-over from the outset - Gt Waltham quickly found themselves 13-2. Promoted to No.4, Luke Tanner - dropped without scoring - then set about a blistering innings of 95 off just 45 balls to turn the game on its head. In an incredible display of power and timing, Tanner hit 17 boundaries (12x4, 5x6) to keep Waltham in the game. With his departure in just the 22nd over, the pendulum started to swing back in favour of South Woodham and despite some lower order resistance, SWF held their nerve for what turned out to be a comfortable victory and maximum points.
Not too much else for me to add really. No amount of superlatives can do justice to Luke Tanner's incredible innings. If the scorecard was accurate, 'Span' went from 50 to 95 in just 15 deliveries (4 of which were dot balls). It was beautifully absurd for those watching on. I've seen plenty of 'destructive' innings down the years but this was an exhibition of clean hitting the like of which I haven't seen for many, many years. Luke thoroughly deserved to be the recipient of the 'Little Man' but the change of pace accounted for him when he was just one blow away from three figures.
271 was above par on a track that played better than it looked. The outfield was hard, fast and difficult for the boundary riders. Kurt (2-28) and Joe (2-40) both bowled a great set of 9 overs*. At 25/2 and 104/2 we were well in the game but Jackman and Dumas took it away from us with their positive stroke play and running between the wickets. Not to take anything away from Jackman but it was Dumas who gave the innings real impetus. Jake put in a good shift across 3 spells, whilst Isaac didn't get the rub of the green - 3 dropped catches and a succession of ground fielding errors contributing to his synopsis. Cam toiled away, showing good pace and control... it was just a unfortunate he was bowling at two batsman that were well set. The rain/bad light in the first 20 overs made it a struggle for bowlers (sawdust?) and Blooma alike and aside from my horrendous error to gift Jackman a boundary to bring up his ton, our ground fielding was pretty good. Just need to think about our body language when the going gets tough.
In reply, Luke single-handedly gave us a chance. Even when he departed, Kurt and Webby looked well set to keep the chase ticking over before a fortuitous bounce led to a frustrating run out. The tail all chipped in and in a long season, the precious 3 batting points that were picked up by the lower order could prove crucial.
In terms of 'lessons learned', we know we need a bit a variation in our bowling attack. The youth emerging from the 3rd XI and on Sunday might just get their opportunity sooner than expected. With our batting, we need to look at the tempo of our innings. Next week we've got Rayleigh. A 2nd XI like ourselves. With home advantage, we should back ourselves.
Thank you to Simon for scoring and for Andy Barker for saving me the embarrassment of 5 points being deducted.
On what I'm sure was quite a difficult and emotional day, a final thank you to Shirley (Bloom) who stayed right to the end to offer her support.

*If someone can explain the rationale for this reduction, I'd appreciate it. I sort of got the 12 overs down to 10 overs thing from a few years back but bowlers are now bowling 25% fewer overs than they did 10+ years ago... and I'm not even a bowler.
