Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost By 36 runs
Match report
Having clinched the title the previous week, newly crowned Division 3 champions Broomfield put the icing on the cake with a 36-run victory against Great Waltham in an entertaining encounter at Mill Lane.
Asked to bat first, Eglin (97) survived an early dropped chance to go on to smash a powerful half-century, falling agonisingly short of three figures. In partnership with Turner (34), they put 108 on the board for the first wicket before the stylish Styles (72) milked the short legside boundary to good effect with a succession of maximums, ably assisted by useful contributions from N Pyne (22) and captain L Farrow (27). A flurry of late wickets for H Eles (2-12) and K James (3-65) saw the innings close on an imposing 301-9.
On a good deck, with a quick outfield and a short boundary to one side, Great Waltham were not daunted by the required rate and rattled along at north of 7-an over to give the chase the impetus it required. H Elles (52) and N Dhanjal (27) kept the scoreboard ticking over before a rapid half-century for K James (62) threatened to spoil the title celebrations. Tight lines from Cowell and a great spell of bowling from Pyne (2-26) kept things in check as the run chase was slowed with the fall of regular wickets to Deacon (4-57). Some huge hits from Reed (27) and De'ath (20) kept the large crowd entertained but Broomfield eventually ran out comfortable winners by 36 runs.
Broomfield are promoted to Division 2 as well-deserved Champions whilst Great Waltham II settled for a comfortable 5th-placed finish thanks to 7 victories in the 2nd half of the season having found themselves in the bottom 2 at the halfway point.
