Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Great Totham 3rd on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Won by 158 runs

Match report Great Waltham thirds hosted Great Totham thirds on an overcast day in Chignal. Having won the toss and elected to bat, the early loss of Andy Hill for 0 (7-1) was overcome by a good rebuild between skipper Josh De’ath and Atul Patel, who brought up the 50 partnership in the eighth over before the captain was eventually bowled for 51 (89-2) in the fourteenth over. Nindi Dhanjal joined Patel at the crease and the pair took us to 136 at drinks for no further loss of wicket.

After losing Patel to the first ball post-drinks for 24, Isaac Elles took a few balls to get his eye in before teeing off while Dhanjal continued to score regularly. Having reached his half-century, Elles holed out for 56 at 234, the pair having put on just shy of 100. Dhanjal carried on largely untroubled, reaching his own 50 shortly afterwards. There followed a few wickets in quick succession, with Arthur Cunningham, Josh Fall and Miles McMillan all falling cheaply to leave the score at 273-7 after 37 overs. Jamie Robinson was caught at backward point shortly afterwards, bringing Alfie Webb to the crease. Trying to put on some quick runs at the end, Dhanjal was out LBW for a fine 74, with Webb and Harrison Parr-Ozols taking us to 289-9 off our 40 overs.

The Great Totham response started with controlled opening spells from De’ath and Parr-Ozols, each taking a wicket while a run out and good fielding meant the run rate was always likely to prove an issue. Robinson came on first change and helped keep it tight, leaving Great Totham 34-3 after 10 overs. Webb joined the party in the next over, taking the first of his two wickets in quick succession before McMillan put in a tidy four-over spell to keep the drinks score to 80-5, meaning that the intermittent rain was the most likely obstacle to a home win.

Cunningham picked up the baton after the resumption, bowling with pace and bounce and gaining his reward as Fall took a second smart catch of the innings. Elles demonstrated his customary control while the obdurate Great Totham batters rode their luck. Perhaps with one eye on the rain, De’ath brought himself back on to clean up, finishing with 4-18 to bring home the ‘W’ for Great Waltham with victory by 158 runs.
