Great Waltham Cricket Club 3rd XI v Rainham 4th on Sat 02 Jul 2022 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Great Waltham 3s welcomed Rainham 4s on a perfect day for cricket. Having lost the toss and been put in by the visitors, the opening pair of skipper Josh De’Ath and Atul Patel were watchful as runs proved hard to come by on a tricky pitch. After an uneventful first 10 overs we were 25/0, with the first wicket of De’Ath (11) falling in the 14th over to leave us at 31/1. Patel was joined at the crease by Nindi Dhanjal and the two remained vigilant to bring us to 63/1 at the halfway mark.

With tight bowling backed up by good fielding from Rainham, runs were still at a premium. The batting pair carried on accumulating, with Patel bringing up a patient half-century before being bowled for 60, the partnership of 89 having taken us to 120/2 in the 32nd over. Needing to add impetus and with wickets in hand, Neil Robinson found the boundary a couple of times before falling LBW (136/3). New batter Andy Hill took advantage of the Rainham bowlers losing their line and length to hit some quick runs and take the score to 171 in the 38th over. Dhanjal lost his wicket for 42 in the 39th over after being joined by Harrison Parr-Ozols. Arthur Cunningham was then run out as we chased quick runs to provide a total to defend, with Will Nuttall the final wicket to fall on the last ball of the innings as we made 179/7.

The Rainham chase began carefully as their batters adjusted to the pitch and the opening pair of Parr-Ozols and Nuttall, both of whom beat the bat frequently but without any luck as the visitors progressed to 43/0 at the 10-over mark. N Robinson and De’Ath came on shortly after as we looked to keep it tight and take wickets, but it took a fine piece of fielding from J Robinson to break the partnership of 64 with a run out in the 15th over. The second wicket came on the halfway mark with the score at 82, leaving the game finely poised. The visitors continued to accumulate steadily before two wickets in the 25th over raised home hopes. However, opener Rajput was still there and, after a further two wickets, found a partner in Chandrakar who was able to stay with him to see the visitors home in the 36th over.

Still, at the halfway point of the season we’re up near the top of the table with seven wins and two defeats. Keep playing the way we can and we’ve got every chance of being up there at the end!
