Noak Hill 1st XI v Great Waltham Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 25 May 2024 at 1pm
Great Waltham Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets
Match report
The 1s travelled to title rivals Noak Hill off the back of last week’s loss. Due to the soggy uncovered pitch, the hosts won the toss and elected to bowl. The pitch was a very tricky one but the Noak Hill openers seemed intent on not using it as they served up a buffet of full tosses to Bloom allowing him to get a decent start. Accompanied with a selection of wides, Bloom and Gibson put on 51 for the opening wicket which was a good result after being stuck in. One good partnership followed another as Bloom and Oabarkhail put on 77 for the 3rd wicket, Dan going past 50 in the process. Due to the difficulty of the wicket, Dan was intent in taking most of the strike to give the new batters a chance to adjust to the lack of pace and bounce. Ollie, Duggers and Humpo couldn’t get going but when Lewis joined him at the crease, Dan slog swept the leg spinner for 4 to bring up his second hundred of the season. Lewis struck a few lusty blows for six to the short boundary as we tried to put up a well above average total. Dan was eventually caught on the deep midwicket boundary for 120 striking 18 fours and 3 sixes. The innings fizzled out losing our last 4 wickets for 4 runs but 214 represented a brilliant score on that surface. A very bizarre scorecard of 120 for Bloom, 39 extras and 17 for Lewis representing the top 3 scores.
We knew how Noak Hill were going to approach it and they came out swinging. We unceremoniously dropped Mirza twice but weren’t made to pay as he was bowled for 11 by Ollie. Ollie picked up a further 2 wickets with JT grabbing 2 from the other end. At 63-5 we were pretty much odds on favourites but we know that Noak Hill bat deep and we would have to stick to our discipline. Unfortunately we lost control in the middle overs and Noak Hill started to wrestle back control. Jakir Hussain was intent on holding the innings together while Abdul Rahman played the aggressor. We just couldn’t get the crucial wicket as they put on 102 for the 7th wicket to put the game out of our reach. Josh bowled a fantastic spell of 9 overs for 18 but sensing him as danger man, the Noak Hill batters just sat on him and took no risks. Jake picked up both the set batters near the end to give us some hope but the damage was done. Their number 10 hit a six to win the game by 2 wickets with 6 balls to go. A missed opportunity.
